Poster artist of the month
Sheila Robinson (1925-1988)
Sheila Robinson was an artist known for her printmaking, design and illustration. She was born in Nottingham and studied at the Nottingham School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where she also taught. Robinson was a highly skilled printmaker who developed an individual technique of relief printmaking using carved cardboard, as well as more commonly used linocut. In the early 1950s, she created notable posters for London Transport, showcasing her innovative designs and experience as an illustrator.

Julian Hows was born in Brixton in 1955 and was one of the leading voices in gay rights during the 1970s. Julian's iconic photos taken at Earl's Court station have taken on a life of their own as a lasting symbol of gender resistance and playful defiance.
In the 1930s increasing demand and ambitious expansion plans meant that the Underground needed new trains. Read about the 1938 stock and years of trials and in-house research and development.
In both the First and Second World Wars, London was at the heart of two huge war efforts. The city needed a functioning transport network, yet this had to be achieved with fewer vehicles, an altered workforce and with bombs raining from the sky.
