Well, that didn’t take long. Just three years after Pretty Little Liars wrapped its seven-season run on Freeform, the Warner Bros. TV series is being eyed for a reboot. Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is on board to develop a new take on the drama series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This alternate version of PLL will reportedly feature an entirely new story with a fresh crop of characters.
The original show, which had Marlene King at the helm, starred Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario and Sasha Pieterse as a group of Pennsylvania teenagers being hunted — largely via text message — by a mysterious figure known simply as “A.” (And eventually as “AD” in the show’s later seasons.) The series based on young-adult books written by Sara Shepard.
In addition to airing for seven successful seasons on ABC Family/Freeform (2010–2017), Pretty Little Liars also birthed two short-lived spinoffs — Ravenswood, which aired from 2013 to 2014, and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, which aired from March to May of 2019. The latter also drew inspiration from The Perfectionists, another book series by Shepard.
Are you down for a Pretty Little Liars reboot so soon after the original series wrapped? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will literally do anything if it keeps him from returning to Afterlife with Archie and Chilling Adventure’s of Sabrina, even if it’s “rebooting” a series that ended three years ago.
I wonder if he’s even the Chief Creative Officer of Archie anymore.
Sabrina was cancelled, not sure how he’s supposed to be working on that.
Jfc. Why???
money
Because people won’t sample anything new until they know it is a hit. Then they binge to catch up. Only, that doesn’t work on Cable TV. They shoot entire seasons (10ish shows) in advance, and don’t decide upon renewal until the end of that freshman run (for rookie shows, returning shows have different renewal windows). So, if a majority of people take a wait and see approach, or even a “wait until after the season and binge it one weekend” approach, tons of shows will fail. Because not enough people will have watched them live, to justify renewal.
.
But people will try something they are familiar with. Sticking the PLL tag on this is just to draw in fans of the OG, who will hopefully stick with the new one based on its merits.
They want to capture all the 15-year-olds who are nostalgic for the show they watched when they were 12.
Not even if it could cure the Coronavirus. Seriously, just no.
Lmao You made this queen scream.
LOL gotta laugh these days right! 😊
If you are going to provide the names of the primary female cast of PLL, you really should include Janel Parrish. Mona was integral to the PLL stories throughout the series.
Mona was the best character.
Why? At least give it another 5 years or so before rebooting it. There’s no need to reboot this so soon. If you have to reboot something, go for something that didn’t get a fair chance the first time round – Firefly for instance, or Witches of East End – not something that fully ran its course and had a proper (although devisive) ending.
That’s a great idea
I don’t care about anyone else’s negativity. I’m excited. I loved the Alex reveal and there just aren’t that many shows that are true mysteries like PLL was. I loved the hell out of that show.
👍👍👍
I loved it too and I’m happy you’re happy, but to paraphrase a certain pretty little liar, I think you’re going to wish it stayed dead.
Yeah I adore the show and it will be forever my favorite I’m just really upset it’s gonna be a whole different cast :(
No. No no no. Please no. Stop. Please stop. No. No.
No no no no no no. Also, no and no. Plus no. This is the worst possible thing that could ever happen to TV. Ever. Pll was a huge part of my teenage years, but I look back and cringe. It died, don’t bring it back. Especially with Aguirre-Sacassa. He’s already turned Riverdale, which started out like a good version of pll, into all the same terrible ridiculous of later pll.
I think it’s too soon to reboot the series they should wait another few years on it
Many potential reboots don’t end up going ahead. I suspect this one won’t. But I will watch if it does of course.
Why! ppl-the perfectionist was like a reboot and it only lasted one season
It was an continuation series since it featured Ali & Mona.
Even though the two book series weren’t related. Never made sense to have two unrelated series be connected when they never were. I bet that’s why it failed.
Caitlin made a brief cameo in Toxic (Penultimate PLL novel), in an anti-bullying video Spencer participates in. She is described as an athletic girl whose brother Taylor killed himself from bullying. So yeah they’re set in the same book universe.
Nope nope nope. Honestly just no. I don’t need that stress and messed up relationships again no thank you.
It hasn’t even been 5 years since PLL ended. What is going on with Warner Bros?
AT&T is what happened to Warner Bros.
I would watch it just for the chance of having a proper plot development from start to finish unlike the original PLL where time had a weird flow and the plot often suffered for things like “the writers forgot” or “that actor was not available anymore” like the Marlene King admitted by the end of the series. Still…we’re talking about the mind behind Riverdale…I guess the reboot it’ll go bananas way before the original one.
I’m guessing this decisions comes after WB realized how well PLL is performing on HBO Max. Why not try to revive PLL: The perfectionists instead? They could make it a proper drama without the teen stuff since the audience of PLL grew up 10 years since the beginning and many, like me, are closer to the big 30
I agree, they should continue The Perfectionists instead.
I think it’s too soon to reboot that show…
If it’s going to be like riverdale, does that mean that even crazier stuff are going to happen? Imagine what A will do now! Hahaha
This show was almost perfect for me. But seasons 5-b and 6 ruined so many things for me…
This time around, how about these guys not romanticize a student-teacher affair.
I agree, I hated that particular plot.
PPL was a great show with an amazing cast. There will be some big shoes to fill, but I say, “Bring it on!”
…. what ?
WTF
i wish i could talk to these people who do these reboots and who ignore certain unexplored potentials
like they are literally going straight to reboot stage and ignoring the perfectionists cliffhanger, why?, what do they gain from this?, what do fans gain from this?
When you think 2020 COULDN’T GET ANY WORSE!
This is absolutely ridiculous… Weren’t the spin-offs already indications that the PLL ship has sailed? Who even asked for this?
Yes, reboot! I loved PPL and miss it so much! One of the shows I always looked forward to every week!
Thanks, but no thanks.
