Hatter’s Castle is written in the melodramatic style of Victorian novel. The language of the tale is vivid and rich. The narration is laden with the nervous suspense and keeps progressing as a cruel and tragic farce.
“‘Yes, that’s it,’ said the Hatter with a sigh: ‘it ’s always tea-time, and we’ve no time to wash the things between whiles.’” Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
The title of the novel is an apparent reference to the classical personage and the tale begins at the teatime in the protagonist’s madhouse… He is literally full to the brim with smugness and self-righteousness and is thoroughly unpleasant right from the start…
He despises his entire family… Everyone in the town is below him… A nincompoop of his son goes to India… He throws out his pregnant and helpless daughter straight into the furious storm… He pitilessly jeers at his wife… And, incompetently, he starts losing his lucrative business…
He falls from grace… His wife is dead… His business is lost… But however bad it all is everything always can go even worse… And now that his favourite beverage is whisky and not tea, his likeness to the notorious mad hatter becomes complete…
The higher are vacuous ambitions the lower one falls.

Brodie ate hungrily and with obvious enjoyment. He was an enormous man, over six feet in height and with the shoulders and neck of a bull. His head was massive, his grey eyes small and deep set, his jaw hard and so resolutely muscular that as he chewed, large firm knobs rose up and subsided rhythmically under the smooth brown jowl. The face itself was broad and strong and would have been noble but for the insufficient depth of the forehead and the narrow spacing of the eyes. A heavy brown moustache covered his upper lip, partly hiding the mouth; but beneath this glossy mask his lower lip protruded with a full and sullen arrogance.

Was scared and rescared, depressed and redepressed by this novel many times. A non-stop journey through heart-wrenching misery. A study in anger. A masterpiece of a novel. A must read for any psychologist. Highly recommend it for people who are willing to learn about dinamics of disfunctional families across generations.
Written beautifully on the topic of life from which the only escape is death. Some people manage to create such lives for their closest ones, without meaning to. Just because they 'know better'.
I read this while being thoroughly depressed as a teen (don't try this at home!) and it gave me, paradoxically, some perspective on things. Even though I should have paid more attention to some of the things in here, at the time. I have never been able to forget this book.

Първата ми среща с Арчибалд Кронин е абсолютен фурор, фанфари и читателско гурме! Не мога да изразя и на половина въодушевлението си от факта, че се запознах с този уникален автор!. А това, че за пръв път го чета сега дори няма да го коментирам.
Майстор на думите и факир на описанията. Всяка дума е на мястото си, всеки ред, всяко изречение те пренася в Шотландия и мрачната, задушаваща атмосфера в дома на Джеймс Броуди. Злодеят, който намразих от първата секунда и до края на всичките 631 страници не съжалих нито веднъж.
Романът е една епична семейна сага за живота на семейство Броуди, изпълнена с безброй трагични събития. Героите са толкова добре изградени, че плаках с тях, ядосвах им се, идеше ми да се развикам на други - живи и истински ги почувствах, като реално съществуващи хора! Из страниците на книгата изживявах едно от най-травмиращите читателски преживявания покрай любимият ми персонаж - Мери.
Един цитат, който перфектно обрисува демоничната същност на Джеймс Броуди:

Бях забравила колко сладкодумен и описателен е Кронин, но с тази книга си припомних забележителния му талант. Този човек умее да създава живи картини и образи, толкова автентични, че заживяваш с тях.
Кронин се е раздал особено в изграждането на своя герой Броуди. Отдавна не бях попадала на толкова антипатичен персонаж- деспот в пълния смисъл на думата; брутален злодей, който потиска останалите, държи ги в подчинение и се смята за центъра на Вселената, около който трябва да се въртят всички и да го удостояват със своето послушание и преклонение.
Джеймс Броуди провокира много емоции в мен, но най- ярко се открояваше силната непоносимост и агресия към същността му.
Такава неприязън съм изпитвала само към един персонаж досега- Кати от “ На Изток от Рая” на Стайнбек. И си мисля, че те двамата са си лика- прилика и биха били чудесна двойка. Докато Кати обаче е лукаво коварна, Броуди е брутално зъл. Той се държи унизително с всички хора, които са под неговото обществено положение и сервилничи пред всички, които са над него. Броуди предизвиква силно отвращение в мен.
Замъкът на Шапкаря е метафоричен душевен затвор. Това е място, където крилете биват прекършени, а свободната воля- пречупена. Това е място, където всичко се крои по модела на шивача- тиранин. Място, където надеждата се изпарява.
Джеймс Броуди е деспот, който смазва ужасяващо достойнството на цялото си семейство. Постоянно сърдит и гневен, постоянно критикуващ, постоянно заплашващ, той е един от най- кошмарните и отблъскващи антагонисти, които съм срещала. Но най- лошото е, че Броуди си вярва, че всичко, което прави- отношението, държанието, ограниченията, всичко…е за доброто на семейството му, но всъщност е заради неговото собствено удовлетворение, заради одобрението на обществото как добре си върши работата като глава на семейството. Приел е формата на чук, който се опитва да изкове нагорещеното желязо, за да му придаде перфектна форма. Но ударите му са толкова силни, че вместо да извае, може да деформира.
“ За��ъкът на шапкаря” е семейна драма, която надхвърли очакванията ми за степента на контрол и психически тормоз, за властта, която може да има един човек над живота на близките си.
Единствения лъч светлина, който се опитва да проблесне през тъмните облаци, надвиснали над семейство Броуди, идва от мечтателната и деликатна душа на дъщерята Мери, и от нежната натура на сестра й Нети. Присъствието на двете момичета дават глътка свеж въздух, както и малкото романтични сцени. Но като цяло историята е много, много тежка, и мрачна. Някои хора просто не стават за родители, а са единствено донори на генетичен материал. За мен Броуди е точно такъв. Само дето той е с претенциите, че неговия материал е специален, все едно платина се лее от чреслата му.
Един от най- любимите ми персонажи в книгата бе д-р Ренуик. Той всъщност е и единственият, на който му стискаше да се изправи срещу Броуди.
Книгата е изключително майсторски написана, при все че е съкрушителна от началото до самия край. Един от най- великите литературни шедьоври, който просто не трябва да се пропуска.

Unul din cele mai interesante personaje ale literaturii universale, domnul Brodie, prototipul celui mai mandru, arogant, lipsit de sentimente om, totul pe fondul unui limbaj pur si simplu perfect.

Drūmāku un nomācošāku grāmatu neesmu lasījusi. Brīžiem palika pārāk slikti fiziski, lai tālāk turpinātu, tāpēc ņēmu pauzi bieži. Tomēr izlasīju.
Diemžēl arī es ģimeniskajās attiecībās esmu saskārusies ar despotismu, alkoholismu, agresiju, emocionālo vardarbību un citiem mēsliem, tomēr tagad es nezinu briesmīgāku cilvēku par Džeimsu Broudiju. Kaut arī viņš nav reāla persona, autors darbu uzrakstījis tik meistarīgi, ka lasītājs šķietami tiek ierauts reālu notikumu virpulī un pēc tam atstāts pilnībā salauzts.
Iesaku, bet neiesaku.

What do you need to know in order to determine if this book will it YOU?
The central protagonist is a horrible, horrible, horrible person. People such as this do exist, but if you are looking for a happy, cute, sweet story, I don’t recommend this! As you get to know this virulently nasty, narcissistic creep one observes the effect he has on those around him. You must give the book some time; doing so gives you knowledge and empathy for those around him. This is essential.
Hatter's Castle is a book of historical fiction. The author weaves in real events, events that took center stage in Scotland and national news in December 1879. We read of the Tay Bridge disaster that occurred during a violent storm on Sunday, December 28. On the 28th, the Tay Rail Bridge collapsed as a North British Railway passenger train on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line, from Burntisland bound for Dundee, passed over it, . Keep in mind though, the Tay Bridge collapse is only one section of a long tale. Other exciting events pull you in too.
The story has fictional characters, but the events spoken of are true. Not all, but some. The message conveyed by the story is important and is absolutely, positively true too. The author was a doctor. Dealing with all sorts of people of different social strata and background was an essential part of his profession. Observing them daily and intimately, he came to know them and understand them on both a physical and psychological level.
Reading this book puts you in Scotland during the latter half of the 19th century. The landscape, people and traditions are drawn.
The author is extremely good at drawing exciting events. He puts you there and he makes you care.
A central theme circles around mental health. Goals, ambition and family ties are woven into this theme.
Inga Lüning reads the audiobook. Her narration is in Swedish. It is what was available to me. Being a fan of A.J. Cronin, the book’s author, I didn’t hesitate even though I do prefer books in their original language. The Swedish translation is done by Louis Renner. It seems good. Inga Lüning’s narration is very good. She modulates the tone for different characters, but not in an exaggerated fashion. She pronounces English names without distortions. Four stars for the narration.
I prefer Cronin’s stand-alones over his series. The first book of a series is usually better than the second. The stand-alones are tighter. Please see the list below.

Една епична семейна сага е този път срещата ми с Кронин. Той не изневерява на стила си, но този път определено не мога да го "обвиня", че пише чиклитите на онова време, тъй като "Замъкът на шапкаря" е съвсем различна книга.
Това е историята на едно семейство, изпълнена с брутални и ужасни нещастия. С доста реалистичен и понякога може би плашещ оттенък при голяма част от сцените. Кронин има таланта да изгражда гнусни, отвратителни човекоподобни създания, като в този роман представителят беше по-долу и от животните в много отношения. Всички останали бяха смазани и унищожени от него, което доведе до голяма част от всички трагични обстоятелства.
Наред със звезрствата и жестокостите на Броуди, имаме прекрасни отрязъци от мигове красота, макар и заплашени от вечната сянка. И това прави романа изпълнен с напрежение. Може би не от най-приятния вид. Човек се досеща, че заплахата е надвиснала над всички. Затова (и с "Дървото на Юда" изпитах същото) не съм доволна, че авторът не се е решил на по-големи възмездия. Кара читателите си да намразят до смърт някого и после да беснеят, че няма достатъчно наказание... Макар и човек да осъзнава, че на този свят поне няма достатъчно наказание, моята справедливост не е удовлетворена :D
Тази книга е много добра, макар и изключително трагична. Напълно достойна е да бъде обявена за най-добрата творба на своя автор.

Cronin wrote and destroyed his firsts drafts of this story while working on it. Finally in 1931 Hatter's Castle, Cronin's first novel, was published.

OMG, after reading many sentimental romance novels that brought me to tears, fantasy/dystopian novels what wowed me with their endless actions, finally there is a book that really truly angered me! And the feeling of being angered, compared to other feelings I've got from reading books up to now, is still awesome as hell!
I don't know what character I hate the most: James Brodie himself, his wife or his son - Matthew Brodie.
First up, James Brodie - "the star" of the novel. He was an extremely delusional man (that I think psychologists around the world may feel hopeless when trying to treat him!), who took nonsense and unproven pride on his so-called noble blood (just because he shared a freaking surname with a noble family), then used that pride and that belief as an excuse for being absolutely rude, arrogant and disrespectful towards other people. Not only he was ridiculously stupid in his own business ("using" his arrogance and rude attitude to chase away his already few customers while there was a big competitors just right next door of his shop??? Really????) and in medical knowledge (OMG, he thought his wife's womb cancer could be transmitted to him!!! God please help this man!), but he also was a disrespectful, neglectful, selfish husband who didn't appreciate a bit of his wife's hard work for him and the family; a father who cruelly threw out his pregnant daughter in the middle of a stormy night because he thought she was a disgrace to his noble blood (to hell with his noble blood!). There were more bad things about this character that it's not practical for me to write down all (it would take me till next week!), but just the mentioned above, I think is enough for anyone who hasn't read this book to have a glimpse of how intolerable James Brodie was! I couldn't imagine that kind of man exist in real life nowadays, because if he is, I will kill him with my own hand without any guilt before he goes on and destroys other lives!
Now come to James Brodie's wife, whose name I later knew as Margaret, a very devoting, hard-working, but also mentally weak woman, who obeyed every single order from her beloved rotten husband, and didn't fight for her pregnant daughter Mary when she was thrown out of the house. She loved Matthew most, but the way she showed her love and her care for her son just ruined his attitude as a grown up man, which led to him pretending to have strong attitude against his father, but whenever there was his father around, he talked like a little scared puppy. And not to mentioned how spoiled he was, spending all of the money that his mom worked her ass off and was indebted to other people to have on drinking and girl-playing! It's good to see him finally left the house for good with that Nancy whore who was the center of the sexual dreams of his father!
What brings the edge for this novel, and a bravo from me to the author who created those characters, that although it was shocking to see many people be destroyed by James Brodie's delusional belief and attitude, while some other suffered from the actions and intentions of other characters (including Brodie himself), we can see those kind of characters everywhere. They were not impractically created, on the contrary, those kinds of models live everywhere among us: we can always find in real life a man who is extremely arrogant and delusional and disrespectful just because he thinks he has the edge over other people; a loving but mentally weak mother, whose way of loving her own children just spoils them; a spoiled son who uses up all the money his loving mother has worked her ass of to gain for him; a devoted, hard-working wife whose work isn't appreciated and respected by her husband; a husband who dreams about another woman while still in the marriage with his wife, and feels happy upon his wife's death; a daughter who hasn't been raised properly, with the lack of sex education that finally results in her being pregnant while not married; a child who is forced to study too much that she can't stand the pressure of it and the terrifying feeling that she will be punished really hard upon failing to achieve the extremely high academic goal her father has set for her, and decides to kill herself... And that's what scared me the most while reading this novel, which I though brought out the wonderfulness of it, and kept me reading pages after pages non-stop. Really amazing!
I don't know what character I hate the most: James Brodie himself, his wife or his son - Matthew Brodie.
First up, James Brodie - "the star" of the novel. He was an extremely delusional man (that I think psychologists around the world may feel hopeless when trying to treat him!), who took nonsense and unproven pride on his so-called noble blood (just because he shared a freaking surname with a noble family), then used that pride and that belief as an excuse for being absolutely rude, arrogant and disrespectful towards other people. Not only he was ridiculously stupid in his own business ("using" his arrogance and rude attitude to chase away his already few customers while there was a big competitors just right next door of his shop??? Really????) and in medical knowledge (OMG, he thought his wife's womb cancer could be transmitted to him!!! God please help this man!), but he also was a disrespectful, neglectful, selfish husband who didn't appreciate a bit of his wife's hard work for him and the family; a father who cruelly threw out his pregnant daughter in the middle of a stormy night because he thought she was a disgrace to his noble blood (to hell with his noble blood!). Като малък често спирах погледа си върху тази книга. Синьото томче се забелязваше и сякаш пред очите ми се появяваше замък, кацнал на хълм, в който по незнайни причини живее тайнствен шапкар. Преди дни взех тази книга и започнах да я чета, подтикнат от друг хубав роман на Кронин - "Цитаделата". И наистина попаднах в страната на чудесата, но с обратен знак - на тъмните, зловещи чудеса. Там, където човешкото его унищожава души, животи, разрушава настояще и бъдеще.

„Castelul pălărierului” de Archibald Joseph Cronin este o poveste tragică, uneori teribilă, uneori grotească, dezgustătoare a unei familii engleze burgheze, în care un singur zeu, un singur rege stăpânește – James Brodie.
Acest negustor nepoliticos, barbar, fără educație, suferă de o mândrie și o vanitate exorbitante. Mândria lui aproape maniacală, care, de altfel, este complet nefondată. Este un tiran crud pentru toată casa. Și cu toate acestea, romanul este scris într-un limbaj ușor, simplu, parcă subliniind cât de ordinare sunt astfel de tragedii.
O carte cumplită pe care vrei să o închizi și să o lași, să te distanțezi de tot ce s-a întâmplat în acea casă de coșmar. Dar în niciun caz nu regret că am citit-o.
Prima parte a cărții ne face cunoscută dispoziția incontrolabilă a omului mândru James. Eforturile întregii familii de a-i mulțumi capriciile. Prima manifestare a independenței fiicei sale Marry și consecințele dezastruoase ale acestui lucru.
Mai revoltător este altceva – comportamentul mamei în această poziție. De teamă să nu fie victima unui alt atac din partea soțului ei, ea preia imaginea unei victime și nu se opune deloc faptului că copilul ei este aruncat din casă. Ce pot să spun!
O lucrare monumentală și, fără îndoială, de viață, care trezește o mulțime de gânduri. Arată ce se întâmplă cu cel care se află sub puterea nesăbuită a mâniei și a tiraniei. Cronin ne învață că părinții și copiii trebuie să se aprecieze reciproc și că o casă – propriul tău castel – trebuie să fie un refugiu sigur, nu un loc de tortură și închisoare.
Este despre viața unei familii victoriene din Scoția. Și când mi-am dat seama de acest lucru, m-am gândit: „Omg, șase sute de pagini despre viața de familie și gospodărie!”. Nu am greșit, dar în asta constă farmecul scrierii autorului.
Cronin arată acele aspecte ale vieții pe care nu suntem obișnuiți să le vedem în paginile prozei englezești.
Creează suspans și toate detaliile sunt pentru a crea acea atmosferă necesară pentru a înțelege pe deplin situația. La ultimele pagini închideam cu mâna foaia ca să nu-mi sară privirea să citesc ceva prea devreme. Atât de tensionant a fost.
Niciodată nu m-a enervat până la culme un personaj ficțional așa cum a făcut-o James Brodie. Și totuși nu tocmai acest nemernic m-a izbit. Să fim cinstiți. Brodie nu este deloc un caz izolat, un reprezentant al unei persoane pe cale de dispariție, ci chiar opusul, este un tip destul de răspândit de oameni.
Un alt lucru este surprinzător, și anume, mediul înconjurător a acestei întruchipări a viciului uman. Oamenii obișnuiți se închină practic în fața lui, tremură la simpla amintire a lui și când îl văd sunt gata să fugă mâncând pământul. Bogații și domnii îl apreciază și îi fac plăcere complimentându-l. Nu este surprinzător faptul că o astfel de politică de „calmare” dă naștere unor tirani nemiloși, înfometați de putere.
Se poate înțelege pe deplin această stare de lucruri în familie. Creșterea tiranică a copiilor și intimidarea lor încă din copilărie, obiceiurile și stereotipurile secolului, patriarhatul incontestabil – toate acestea au afectat inevitabil pe cei ai casei. Dar nu pot numi un astfel de comportament al oamenilor, complet străini, rezonabil și natural. Pur și simplu nu cred că un întreg orășel să fie atât de speriat de un om.
Cartea este tristă, dificilă, dar ți-o vei aminti toată viața. Cele mai rele așteptări din această carte sunt întotdeauna îndeplinite. Iar când va trece influența acestei cărți și dacă va trece până la capăt, nu se cunoaște.
Toată lumea trebuie să citească această carte!

O carte greu de digerat prin prisma realităților pe care le dezvăluie, dar o carte care prin dramele relevate arată la ce se poate ajunge atunci când nu există umanitate. Un mare semnal de alarmă pentru toți părinții autoritari şi cei care vor să îşi rezolve neîmplinirile/nereuşitele prin copiii lor, presiunea imensă pe care o pun pe umerii lor fragili poate să le frângă aripile!

Психологическая драма. Или семейная драма. В общем, тема психологического насилия и тирании в семье. Несмотря на, может быть, предвзятое к английской литературе отношение, этот роман мне понравился. Первая треть не так интересна, но дальше заинтересовывает и раскручивается. Есть о чём подумать, чем возмутиться.
В центре повествования семья Броуди, во главе с самодуром и деспотом Джеймсом. Забитая жена, запуганные дети (впрочем, уже подросшие) с комплексами прилагаются. Ну понятно, что из того тоталитарного режима, существующего внутри этой ячейки общества, дети свободными и успешными не выйдут. Любовь родителей, отсутствие эмоционального давления на психику важны для нормального развития детей, и это не пустые слова. Дальнейшее развитие сюжета только подтвердит эту истину.
Джеймс, я думаю, противен всем читателям. Вряд ли кто встанет на его сторону. Раздутое самомнение, презрение к окружающим, грубость, гордыня - нехороший человек, в общем. Редиска. Я всегда считал и продолжаю считать, что такие люди чувствуют себя королями только потому, что им просто некому дать хорошенько под зад в нужные моменты. Конечно, это персонаж где-то гиперболизированный, но на самом деле не так уж он и далёк от жизни, встречаются и хуже. У каждого из нас, я думаю, есть пример.
Мэтт по своей мерзотности перещеголял отца. То же тщеславие и другие недостатки, но добавляем сюда двуличие и склонность к воровству.
Мэри, старшая дочь, самый положительный персонаж. Хотя и миссис Броуди человек по сути безгрешный, но зашуганный мужем.
Что интересно, я только к половине книги узнал какой год на дворе. Сначала думал, что первая четверть 20-го века. Оказалось, 1880-ые.
По атмосфере этот роман мне снова напомнил Грозовой перевал и Тринадцатую сказку (которые похуже будут).
В общем, добротная книженция. Могу рекомендовать всем.

Greatly underrated.
Being a long term Mr Cronin's fan ever since my younger years, I must say that this is his best book.
His writing and his narrating skills were amazing.
The best thing, though, was the characters development.
First off, let me start with a talk about, the main character, the "Hatter" himself, Mr James Brodie.
Selfish, abusive, self indulged man who ruined his family and his life. He was racist, believed to c0me from a rather uneducated family, and therefore he believed in power, the type of power from the "Winton" that granted him the right to harass anyone underneath him.
Brodie was extremely delusional, a trait that showed both in him and his mother ( maybe father aswell).
The scene in the end, where James, a completely utter mess, a sad man sitting in his couch, quietly mourning as he glanced at the pale dead body in front of him never seems to stopped me from pitying a character that I spent most of the book despising on.
A delusional man who in the end, received a full tragic blow.
Best book, very depressing and I certainly don't recommend this tragedy to anyone who is already depressed, anyway it was a very worthy read and I loved it!!.

This book definitely captures the turmoil uf a dysfunctional family, whose members are slowly destroyed by the singular ambition of the head of the family:James Brodie.
Basically,this book is about loss:loss of innocence, loss of succes, loss of family,loss of self-respect, loss of everything that truly matters and shapes us into what we are.
The characters are all tormented in their own way,and yet they choose to rather turn a blind eye to their problems instead of trying to fix them. There is no such thing as hope for the members of this family. There is only regret,fear and sadness. Every significant moment is hidden by a bitter-sweet cover,and the ending,although quite predictable will still leave you with a slightly hopeless feeling,that may turn your stomach a bit and make you question what is really important in life and what are our true expectations.

So after reading approximately 23 books and novellas of A J Cronin (I think I have three left unread) I finally got to Hatter's Castle. I had put it off for so long, frankly because I knew it was his first, I had heard it was horribly depressing, and I have so few left I try to space them out.
Well I'm not sure what it says about me but I actually thoroughly enjoyed this. Yes, depressing things happen but it is the result of a single person, not the whole cast. Mr Brodie is a narcissistic, megalomaniacal father of three young adults and husband to a long suffering, yet spineless wife.
This is the story of how a delusional man can destroy the lives of almost everyone he touches. There is an exception. Or two. I won't spoil things. But not all is gloom.

Definitely not a book that I would recommend. It was so very depressing and just hard to get through as the main character "Brodie" engulfed the whole book and this character had not one redeeming quality.
This was one of A.J. Cronin's earlier works and leaves a lot to be desired in his writing ability.

Čia turėjo būti Vasara su knyga šeimos nario mėgta knyga, tačiau per vėlai pasiėmiau, supratau, kad nebespėsiu, ir skaičiau Raganius: Prieškarinių laikų sodžiaus gyvenimo šešėliai. O šią ramiai pabaigiau paskui.
Apie "Kepurininko pilį" išgirdau iš babytės - tai buvo ne visai jos vaikystės, labiau jaunystės knyga, jai palikusi stiprų įspūdį. Mano įspūdis gal ne toks stiprus, t.y. istorija manęs nė kiek nesukrėtė, tačiau skaityti buvo įdomu ir gana lengva. Ir net veikėjų bejėgystė, kuri mane dažnokai nervina, šį kartą neužkliuvo - gal dėl to, kad patys veikėjai apie tą savo bejėgystę tiek smarkiai nemąsto, o kai kuriems ir tinkamus sprendimus pavyksta priimti.
Apie "Kepurininko pilį" išgirdau iš babytės - tai buvo ne visai jos vaikystės, labiau jaunystės knyga, jai palikusi stiprų įspūdį. Kronins dod iespēju ielūkoties kādas angļu ģimenes dzīvē un domāju, ka nevienu šī grāmata nespētu atstāt vienaldzīgu. Grāmata par to, kā izveidojas ģimenes locekļu dzīve, kad ģimenes galva ir nežēlīgs despots.
Galvenais varonis Džeimss Broudijs ir izcili pretīgs personāžs. Uzslava Kroninam par tik spilgtu attēlojumu, lasot grāmatu, Broudiju ir neiespējami neienīst.
Un pats skumjākais šajā grāmatā ir tas, ka tā ir reālistiska. Tādu ģimeņu diemžēl ir daudz.
