Best Perfume for Women 2020

Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum Intense Guerlain (female) ~ 2019

Mon Guerlain Eau de Parfum Intense is a deliciously sweet edition of Mon Guerlain, with an emphasis on the quality and intensity of tonka beans which acquire a caramelized, cherry-nutty facet. The fragrance is also considerably warmer than the original, suitable for cold weather. You can find an overview of different Mon Guerlains in Mon Guerlain Bloom of Rose: New Roses from Guerlain.

Best Perfume Unisex 2020

Black Orchid Parfum Tom Ford (unisex) ~ 2020

Black Orchid Parfum Tom Ford is a worthy successor of the original Black Orchid. Not the easiest one to wear, but certainly one of the most complex and intriguing. Darker and sweeter, in which the note of truffles is realistic and delicious. We have a great write-up about it in comparison with the rest of the Black Orchid perfumes: Black Orchid Parfum by Tom Ford: The Blackest of Black Flowers.

So looking forward to the upcoming community awards. I got more into this site around the time last year, when the 4th community awards were going and utterly enjoyed it. It became a daily routine to check out fluctuations and read more about some of the nominated perfumes, looking at the notes, comments and articles. Loved that this took place in this time of the year, that can often be hectic with work - where many things need to be finished - and Christmas coming up. It gave me moments to myself and enhanced my Christmas anticipation. I hope everyone will be able to enjoy it just as much!

I'm astonished by the bottle winners: most of them look like they would be found on Barbara Cartland's vanity table. I guess I'm more of a minimalist.

LSAUG 10/07/21 11:52

So the readers of this magazine that have signed up pick the winners? I'm late to the party. I guess I will vote for this year. How does a perfume end up on the list for selection? There are soooo many fragrances out there, impossible to smell even a small fraction of what is made.

The only thing I own on any of the lists is a vintage bottle of Opium. I've smelled a few on the lists but not many. Wow what a task to pick a favorite female perfume of all time! I'm glad Shalimar, (I used to own a small bottle but never repurchased) beat out Hypnotic Poison which is nice, it is a bit boring, Coco Mademoiselle and Chanel #5 smell like bug spray to me. I've just never been a big Chanel Fan sorry.... I know people love their stuff... I'm more into Chanel's contemporary, Jean Patou. I guess Chanel won in the end since that brand is still around but they just never won me over.

Well I'm just happy to see my favorite of all time hypnotic poison, get up in the best of all time lol.
But we all know taste in scents are purely subjective and I don't understand all the whinging about the results.

Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum

Atheos 01/04/21 13:44

Congrats to the winners. Interesting reading. To those that are butt hurt by the results lol.
Try and understand that smell is a sense, like the sense of taste, and is different for everyone.
Someone loves a fragrance, someone else dislikes the fragrance.
Someone loves a taste, someone else dislikes the taste.
So what?
There is a high wank factor in food evaluation, but this factor is much higher in fragrance evaluation.
So due to there being 7.8+ billion different takes on the sense of smell it is a risk in purchasing only on others recommendation.
But that said, so far I've found if a fragrance has a 4.20+ rating with many votes, it's a good gamble.
Best wishes for all in 2021!

During lockdown my perfume comforts were Alien, Alien Musc Mysterieux, Angel, Pink Sugar, La Vie Est Belle, and Dior Addict (2002) so the Super Sillage and I Hate This Perfume categories both definitely speak to me :P
Wishing everyone a happy new year, with more love and peace for us all.

I agree that the winners are good perfumes, I own most of them lol. I don't complain when niche brands become popular. Afterall, I am here because I love perfume.
I merely said it would be cool if the more "unknown", or "niche" scents stood more of a chance. Since they are not as well distributed, not everyone gets the same chance to try them. That's all. I'm not "offended" that the winners won. Lol

Congrats to all the winners and whilst it may not completely reflect my preferences, that’s kinda the point. A great award process that rewards the broadest appreciation of the art of fragrance development. It’ll be some additional guidance for my future purchasing decisions. But to the teams behind each of the fragrances, thank you and well done. It’s a better world for the work you do and it’s greatly appreciated.

So many people are butthurt about the winners. Stop whining and calling peoples tastes mediocre just because they enjoy whats popular - this is nonsense.

I personally don't care for Tom Ford fragrances but I appreciate that my tastes are unique and won't bash Tom Ford fans. Just revel in the fact that you might have unique taste in fragrance - no one will smell like you and I think that's even more special - and if someone likes what you wear then you can recommend it with all enthusiasm.

If anything 2019 releases should have been filtered out of "Best of 2020" categories.

Scent is all subjective so its useless being mad at the winners of this competition, or the thumbs down button of all things.

Dear Phirun, many greetings, please allow me to explain from my end that my criticism of established corporate brands stems from my dislike of the way they do business and the fact they are merely profits-driven. I am a corporate lawyer and I see these things behind the curtains. I would love to see independent artists being rewarded for their vision and their effort. That is all. It's not that "I love to complain". I wanted to make a more general statement about the perfume industry. In any case, art in every form deserves to be acknowledged. Best wishes to all fragranticans!

COSMICSCENTS 12/31/20 10:33

Wow a lot of Guerlain winners, my favorite perfume house. I don't know if Angels Share deserves second place for best perfume bottle, I went to Saks to smell it and when I saw the bottle on display from far away I could tell the cap was plastic which I think does not go well with the glass bottle, it should have been glass also for the top.

Complaining about mass-marketed mainstream brand winning a popularity contest “groundbreaking!” *YAWN* 🙄 If your brand doesn’t have accessibility and lives in obscurity, then don’t blame people. These are the same people that will also complain about a obscure brand becoming popular because they just love to complain *GAG*.

Congrats to all the winner and hopefully this is sending a message to Dior to go back to their OG Homme line instead of the 2020 mess. People love DHI and DHP, so please make them available in the US! I agree with you @Annemarie I see any blue stuff I thumb down too! We need more fun categories for next year: like overrated and boring, complacent and safe, worst/best blind-buy, stinky oud, another vanilla, unimaginative etc... haha

I agree with Finerthingsinlife and mikemuscles 21. Just boring, predictable (big business) choices for the most part. Guerlain? Dior? Tom Ford? Yawn. I wish we could give independent houses more of a chance, since true quality and imagination comes mainly from them IMO. Anyway, interesting to get to know people's tastes! I for one hate Shalimar and all its flankers, hee hee...

The masses have spoken! Lol I just wish that more of the population could try more of the fragrances. Maybe then the result would be different all the way down the charts and less fragrances from mass produced companies would be in all the top spots. But we like what we like, and this is a fragrance democracy. At least I haven't heard anyone say, "Make Fragrantica Great Again". Ooops sorry, that was supposed to be a joke. Am I making things political again?

I enjoy the 'thumbs down' feature - makes it more interesting. I get a wicked little frisson from voting Sauvage down every chance I get.

The 'no sugar' category is fun for those of us who enjoy a sugar-less rush. Very glad to see Eau des Merveilles up there. What a masterpiece that is. And Encre Noire as the winner - a fragrance that can easily be obtained for less than $100. Boom!

Well, the results were pretty much what I expected and for the most part they did justice. I'm very happy not only for the first place of DHI but also for the success of the Men's perfumes of the house of Dior in general. Dior Homme line is, by far, my beloved one but with the EDT (2011)
and Parfum discontinued ( one can't be sure about the new Homme Parfum formulation), the line disintegrates and the house is definitely going the wrong direction in my humble opinion. Alas, the hunt for sale numbers is relentless...

Glad to see Shalimar still being the best for women’s! Also Mugler angel does not deserve the hate. It’s not even that extreme. This year’s new releases have not really excited me. I hope there will be more interesting releases next year and that the pandemic will be done so I can sniff in stores again

I really enjoyed looking through this! Also, I would love to see a "Best Affordable Fragrance" category next year, maybe a "Best Nostalgic Fragrance" (like the best fragrances to trigger nostalgia) category, too :)

I admit I was expecting something different . Who selects the candidates ?
The editors, the members ?
I am a bit disappointed with the winners. Nothing exiting . Nothing new .
Sharlimar is winning year after year.
I tried very hard to like it but the scent is heavy and definitely outdated ( to my nose) and I suspect it must be reformulated from the original masterpiece.
A lot of TOM FORD . In my opinion all equally good perfumes but nothing exiting .
I agree with thumbs down being unnecessary .
I don't understand Bacarrat 540 but I admit I have differed preferences , No Hermes this year ?

Very cool tradition. Guerlain steals the show this year, well deserved!

It was a fun contest and it was interesting to see other people's opinions on some of my personal favourites. Very happy that Shalimar still reigns, my favourite composition of all time. I would personally love for the best discontinued category to be brought back for 2021. Best jasmine perfume would also be interesting to see - I know white flowers have been done in 2018, but jasmine specifically seems to always create polarised opinions.

Next time don't add thumbs down. It really doesn't make any sense.

Tom Ford and Chanel on the Niche category is beyond me.
I have a different concept about being Niche. Overall : Well Done.
Angel's Share deserve all the hype and props, by far the best fragrance of the Year. 10/10.

A small clarification for some. These lists are the result of users voting. Anybody can vote. It was a big ad on the website for a few weeks. So if something should've been or not on the list, obviously, other people thought otherwise. As always, it's good fun to vote and see the results.

I hate this perfume, I highly agree with la vie est belle and sauvage. They should have added baccarat Rouge, flowerbomb, j adore and coco mademoiselle.

The Hated list usually reflects the popularity ;o) Very often the most liked and the most hated perfumes are the same or close to that. Another reason would be – they are just super strong with enormous sillage, so it bothers other people, especially if you smell them from almost everyone around.

Why are several very popular perfumes that are well loved on the hated list?

Lol, Alien was the winner for sillage 6+ feet. That’s definitely no lie.

Angel’s Share has a beautiful bottle. Would love to be able to smell it some day.

Wow, Angels' Share was killing it this year. It's everywhere! Hats off to Killian. I think Anna Sui's Sky got robbed for best perfume bottle this year. That Shalimar bottle looks just like the original but with stencils.

Fun as always. Now let’s hope for a «Best skin scent for close encounters» category for december 2021
