Happened to come across a vintage bottle of this at my store. I like it! Opens with a pungent citrus and verdant blast with maybe some Currant up top. After a few minutes it does this powdery waltz of iris and oak moss. Finally settles into a creamy musk with a muted vetiver. Perfectly unisex to my nose. Smells like sweating in a park on a vibrant spring day when flowers are blooming.

Lovaloo

I have the mini "parfum de toilette" concentration, not the EDP.

A cold, deep, earthy, green floral chypre. Citrus, raspy galbanum, cooling, clean florals like violet, hyacinth, and lotv. As it progresses, the rose and iris/orris come forward. The base is somewhat powdery with animalics and dense wood notes. The vetiver is ashy, smoky, the cedar is peppery.

The classic chypres of yesteryear have been stripped of natural moss, and sadly this process has rendered most of them textureless. Not true of this one, the galbanum and vetiver are bitter and hoarse enough at both ends for it to be a pleasantly dense, textured wearing experience.

Not quite as enthralling as Chanel No. 19. Silences has progression, but less dimension overall. It's certainly fantastic value at its price. If you want iris + chypre, save up for Chanel No. 19. If you want dense, woody, green, pick up a bottle of Silences. ...Or get both.

deslilas

Lovely except something is bothering me. Maybe it's the hyacinth / lily-of-the-valley? Or whatever the "green notes" are supposed to be? It's dank and earthly, almost like the tomb, but then the spring-like accords bring, at least for me, a bit of a jarring innocence, that is at the same time totally shameless against the demure, introverted backdrop. Then...

Anyone else get a weird sunscreen vibe on the dry down?

I got this because it's supposed to be a more affordable, easy to find fragrance in the vein of the original Givenchy III. But I'm not sure what to think of it. There does seem to be a lack of a certain sophistication those older 50s/60s fragrances had.

This was my signature night perfume in my 20's some time ago. I got it as a gift and I instantly fell in love! It was so sensual and sophisticated and it was developing really sexy on my skin, so I remember I couldn't stop sniffing myself and I thought is the best perfume ever! There was something very cool and distant, but at the same time sweet and inviting...2-3 years ago I decided to find it and buy it again, since it was discontinued. For my surprise I couldn't find any similarities to what I felt before. Somehow, it smells like an old one and it doesn't develop to that sweetness or to anything at all. It stays absolutely the same from the time I spray it till it fades.I'm still emotionally connected, so I keep it, but if I want to reproduce similar sensation like before, I use Infinite Definite by Laurent Mazzone and it gives me almost the good old vibe of Silences

So, Silences...
A vintage deep green for winter.
It is a hate/love one.
Serious also.
Nothing more to say.

Who doesn’t want to love a perfume named Silences? I hoped it would be beautiful, but on me it is not. I am so disappointed. I have the current Sublime version, which evaporates and all scent vanishes except for an odd sour dill note. I wish I had met it in its vintage formulation.

Frogette

Starts off promising, but no sillage whatsoever. Extremely weak longevity. The initial blast, however, is lovely. I remember my mother wearing this in the 1980s.

lmscully

What a disappointment. I bought a big 3.4 ounce EDP of Silences because of so many comments that it smells like Chanel 19. It does not. It has a vague green drugstore men's cologne scent to it when sprayed. I gave myself four hits this morning and I couldn't smell it by the time I walked out the door. If I have my nose against my wrist I can smell that I have some kind of scent on but no enough to pick out any notes.

Heinrich_B

I have an older bottle of this, the edp version produced from 2004 to 2010 from what I know.
The smell is made with quality ingredients that is for sure, it has a very natural feeling...but can't put my head around what that smell actually is.
It is floral, roseish, earthy, soapy and has a very familiar natural smell of a plant, root or leaf of something....quite not sure what it is though....I feel it is something like a nettle leaf smell, but i havent smelled those in ages so i am not sure.

I do not get the forrest smell similarities like others do, not at all.
Being a man, i would not feel ok to wear this, i think it leans feminine.
Very natural smell, very cool bottle, good performance, yet weird.

My wife didnt liked It, gave it to my mother

Simply beautiful. It is purple and green, lush, clean, and magical. It smells like fresh green grass and plump, bright blooms. I'm in love with the mysterious, warmer, darker green, which is deeper, softer, and less bracing. The aroma of a deep dark foggy forest where the foliage is constantly an intense dark shade of green and the air is always hazy and mysterious. Lovely!

naptimenyquil

a very earthy, green, bergamot scent that smells like it's from the forest. a very witchy, earthy bergamot scent. i also pick up incense notes in this, i know it isn't listed though. i'd imagine a witch in a 90s movie wearing this, i love it!

doeyes

got it for 6-ish CAD. for the price it's a great value. but it smells horrible. it's definitely green, it reminds me a lot of a forest, but not in a good or enchanted way like people described it as. it smells a bit like an earthy, cheap soap. i tried some and the room was smelling almost sickeningly earthy for hours.. if you're into that kind of thing, it's probably for you. but definitely not for me.

EspressoAddict

Aromatic and dark, it's like smelling the damp cold air deep into an enchanted forest at night. This would be the perfume that queen Titania would be wearing in "a midsummer's night dream". Copious amounts of oak moss mix with aromatic greens and hints of flowers, most prominently whiffs of delicate muguet, perhaps a hint of narcissus and hyacinth dancing around it. It's an absolute powerhouse of a perfume, intense and long lasting. A long time lover of Chanel 19 did find it reminiscent of "a facet of c.19", but definitely not a dupe of it. However she did love it and enquired about it so she could buy it herself, so probably it appeals a lot to the tastes of those that enjoy 19.

I'd have sworn there's some patchouli in it, but maybe it's just my skin. I am a lover of patchouli and this scent satisfies my nose. There's almost a....chewy thickness to the scent. It's definitely not for the faint hearted, neither for those that prefer drier or floral perfumes, since there is nothing shy or weak about it. I feel it needs a cold day, overcast perhaps and the smell of rain, for you to enjoy it's full potential. I'm waiting eagerly for autumn since I've only bought it in June and haven't had the chance to enjoy it in such a way just yet.

Me, i feel as if, once such a grey and dreary day comes, the perfume will transform itself from a purely cosmetic aromatic essence into a magical elixir, or perhaps a potent hallucinogen, that, once inhaled, will transport me into that dark mythical forest, where i can witness luminescent fairies dance on the lakeshore and beautiful elven queens participate in mystical ceremonies, away from the prying eyes of humans....

Absolutely adore it, on the verge of worshipping it.

Groovygal

Chanel No19 it is not. This fragrance it greener. It lingers. It has loads of bergamont coming through. If you like one you will like the other, First on you get sharp green as in pine sol cleaner. It mellows pretty quickly to lemon. Stay with it as the middle floral notes come through. Don't give up and when the final musk and veiter shine through it blends into a complex earthy scent that is quite a delight. If Chanel No 19 is the classy cool beautiful reserved cousin, then Silences is the cousin that always comes late to the party, gets drunk and stays too long. She is just as beautiful but she laughs at convention, thinks her cousin is a bit boring and most of all she is a little dirty. No19 has a hard time saying 'yes' while Silences has a hard time saying 'no'. I love both of these fragrances. I am devoted to my No19 however, when I want to smell like me and make sure people stand up and notice, Silences it is. This is the scent that stands up to what No19 cannot: Smoke and a boozy bar, Rock concerts and bad pick up lines, a long walk in snow and a slow dance on the beach. The price cannot be beat...a huge bottle for less than 40 dollars?! You can't go wrong and if you hate it....give it to someone who likes gals that stay too long at the party.

missm2u

I've had this for a few years. It was a blind buy and has felt like a mistake from the start. Just smelling it in the bottle was enough to turn me against it. I tried it a few times and wound up (as someone else said) washing it off.

But today, before I claimed it on Basenotes as my worst blind buy ever, I figured I should give it a real fighting chance.

So I gave it some good coverage (chest, elbows and wrists). When it first goes on, I have to say it smells like old perfume that has gone off. But I was patient and gave it a chance to mature.

And, what do you know, it turned into something I like. Well, "like" may be a bit strong. Let's just say I don't hate it.

The bitterness is still there, but the icky soapy scent has faded. More of the floral notes seem to develop and occasionally there's a whiff of sweetness.

Silences is never gonna be a favorite, but I think I'll keep trying it in different settings. And I'll have to revert to White Linen as the absolute worst blind buy I've ever tried. My best friend has worn White Linen for years and I always compliment her on the scent. So I tried some and learned that, on me, it smells like bug spray.

Recently I was on a quest about a nice, soft, and green fragrance and I thought that this perfume would be the one.... I had to order it online via Ebay because it did not exist in my country. Unfortunately it is not what I expected........
It is very strong, heady and pungent. It really represents the decade that it was launched (end of 70s, early 80s) with all these strong perfumes around....... It really reminded me the majority of the perfumes that my mother used to wear during that period. I am very sorry to say that it turned my stomach. I have not smelled Chanel No. 19 so I can not compare them and I would not be objective. I am afraid that the floral green category is quite difficult, until now the majority of the perfumes that I have tried are either too strong or light with zero performance (quite upsetting too, especially when a perfume bottle costs around 90 euros). I am afraid that, I will remain with the old, good memory of "Look" by Vera Wang and "Dawn" by SJP. Anyway, I would like to kindly thank all my friends from this wonderful community about their proposals, the task to find a nice fragrance according to one's preferences is certainly not easy, it is a very subjective matter and many factors can also contribute to this. P.S. I really pressed myself to give it a chance so I kept it on my inner elbows for a couple of hours but it was irritating...... Eventually I had to wash it off, but it was still there....

skybunny

This is the dirtiest clean scent I've come across.

Earth, dirt, crushed bitter leaves, astringent, smoke, and soap.

The soap note is nice, though!! Its the kind of soap that's a white-ish bar (not dove) and you could cut it up with a razor in one of those youtube videos. This scent is so incredibly unisex, IMO.

I think all of the flowers listed are present, but not the actual flower, just the cut up leaves and stems left over after you make a bouquet of those flowers.

So imagine - the smell of a soap bar cutting video, but you're in the gloomy countryside with dirty hands after gardening in over cast and misty weather. All the cut up flower stems from your garden are around you and someone on the other side of the house is smoking a cigarette. Distill it - that's Silences.

I love it! Thank you, Jacomo :)

cedrat

This is a beautiful fragrance that leans feminine. Greenish opening - it's not as green as some of the reviewers make it out to be, and the bitter galbanum is felt throughout. Overall, a masterful gem that smells very good for its price. Go easy on the sprays as this is a very 'perfumey' perfume and it has strong projection and sillage.

Oh, boy. I have been trying to remember the name of this perfume. I owned a bottle in the 80s and LOVED it.

Update: I bought it. It just arrived. Whoa. I don't remember it being this GREEN. I only remember that I loved it.

I think this just proves how my sense of smell has been conditioned toward sweet fragrances which are so popular now. I still like it. However, if I sprayed it now in a store I wouldn't walk away thinking this was the best thing ever...just because it's very GREEN.

I would also say that it's quite unisex.

swedishmilk15

A revelation. Demands the right weather (overcast). Galbanum slaps you, violet soothes you. Mosses and woods lend their intrigue. Iris keeps the whole thing grounded. Certainly a captivating magic emerging from the mist, here.

Recommended to those who like Pheromone, Private Collection, Aromatics Elixir, Miss Rocaille, and of course Chanel no.19!

I purchased a 1.7 oz PDT spray of Silences back in December 2021 (I love the bitter "greenness") from an ebay retailer at a very good price. My bottle & box are by all descriptive and pictorial accounts, of the 1st generation from several decades ago (separate cap, only "Silences" labeled on bottle, light grey box, etc.) but there is no batch code on neither the bottle nor the box.

I don't suspect it is counterfeit, as Silences, even for older "vintage" bottles, is not that expensive. Perhaps Jacomo started to label batch codes on their bottles and boxes AFTER mine was produced.

So here is my question to you Silences aficionados who have older ("vintage") bottles like mine: Do any of you have bottles or boxes with no batch code?

Please respond on Fragrantica publicly or PM me, I'm quite puzzled by this.

Thanks

Jacomo Silences (1978) - green floral - #gerardgoupy and jean-claude niel’s perfume starts with cut-grass Galbanum, pissy, yet caramel-like Cassia, and bright citruses. That morphs quickly into a lush floral: green Hyacinth, dewy Lily, indolic Jasmine together with Rose and powdery yet dry Iris. All these supported in woody moss base with lots of white musks.

albarine

It dosen't need words, but the Silences of the green fog blown by Merlin , from the forest to the castle, to express the scent of Excalibur. So chic, timeless, charismatic, without any sugar, it could be the scent of a man or a woman, very near of Chanel 19.

OopsyDaisy

This is quite lovely!
It is green, it is mossy. It opens like a forest, wet in spring just as the weather warms up and the flowers pop out. With some time it feels like you go in deeper, into summer. There's a sweetness or a ripeness to it. I love the bergamot in this and the jasmine. The vetiver and sandalwood balance the fresh green, it adds a more mature and sexy vibe I think. I don't think I'd give this to a girl, this is a scent for a woman.
To me this is NOT a dupe for Chanel No 19, which is much more refreshing and intriguing to me. This is charming and inviting, where Chanel is the aloof, more sophisticated older sister. I hoped they would be more alike, but I thoroughly enjoy this perfume in its own right. And the price was right, so I have to regrets purchasing this! It makes me feel like a friendly forest fairy.

Glorious & Affordable, Miglin Pheremone Leaning Green Beauty With 8+ Hours Wear Time & Mild To Moderate Projection. It's A Keeper! 04/10/22: I need to amend this posted comment here because while I thought that I had Silences EDP, (because that is what I ordered), but by double checking the label on the bottom of the bottle, instead I was sold/sent Silences Sublime EDP purchased online, as a tester & it came in a plain box. And also, this scent is milder than what I experienced & wrote at first. Today as I sprayed this & revisited this again, it is reminding me more of Cardin Choc for Women, with a coriander & marijuana notes. Light & soft in wear & lasts about 4-5 hours. It's pleasant. 04/26/22: Added Note: Silences Sublime is the Only version currently available to purchase with non cursive font on the front of the bottle. Please refer to the Fragrantica page for Silences Sublime by Jacomo. It's clearly explained there. I get it now. I am sure that I would have really enjoyed the original even more. But sadly, Silences original with the cursive font is completely discontinued & unavailable.

pandora

A pleasure to discover Silences! It makes me feel elegant and clean.

Lomama

Ahhh Silences, you accidentally pissed lemon into Chanel 19, and tried to clean it up with a plop of hyacinth!

Silences definitely smells feminine and 90s to me. Jessica Rabbit or the lipstick babes from Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" were probably wearing this on screen.

Is it a Chanel 19 dupe? No. Like I said, lemon pissed in it, and hyacinth took a plop. Silences is not silent; it is strong AF, and in that way brash and tacky, but though these same words can be ascribed to Jessica Rabbit and the lipstick babes, men still love them. So, ladies, you decide if you want to incarnate that or not.

xpetra82

Not easy to find...i was lucky enough to find a dusty one today on a bottom self of a shop...and yes...it is very close to no19 in a quarter of the price. i love it !

MistAgain

(I recently bought the EDT version (removeable cap), medium gray box, italic signature font as pictured. I figured I'd buy it since this is discontinued and I might not be able to find a bottle if I waited too long. The box was sealed in cellophane but I can't find where to check Jacomo codes.)

I waited a week before using it so that it could settle from being shipped. The first time I wore this, it seemed weak and didnt last past 2 hours. Perhaps I became anosmic to it? I don't know. But as of writing this review, I've had it on my arm for 4 hours (1 spray) and I can smell it wafting up through my long-sleeved shirt.
I find that Silences is in the same vein (though not completely similar) as Je Reviens by Worth (newer version), except Silences doesn't have a heavy dose of smokey vetiver like Je Reviens does.
Upon initial spray, I could smell bitter lemon mixed with galbanum, vetiver and oakmoss with hyacinth barely peeking through. Then the scent starts to smell a little soapy after a minute and is somewhat similar to the clean soapiness in Paloma Picasso. After about 5 minutes the sweet hyacinth takes the stage with narcissus, and orange blossom rounding it out. The base notes are blended nicely and support the heart. I can detect the ambrette a little easier than the other base notes, but none of them dominate the scent. About 3 hours later, the iris begins to give off a faint lipstick note and blends in with the other florals.
It is now 5 hours later and has turned almost into a skin scent on me but that is to be expected from an EDT.
So far I really like Silences. It has alot of the notes that I like and I can see myself wearing this often.

Jabouba

If you love Chanel 19 or vert de fleur then this one is yours.

HerNameisVeronica

Historically I'd not liked Green Chypre's and as I become a woman of a certain age, decided lock-down was a PERFECT time to explore scents. No one but my dogs and husband for feedback, but a good start. I bought the vintage (grey box) as much for the cool bottle as the recommended as "green".
It did take a few wearings, I had to hold off on the initial, "get this off me". Yes, I've been spoon fed "instant gratification" scents. Sometimes waiting is worth it. I find myself reaching for it more and more when I need a relaxing, unobtrusive, but present scent. One that accompanies me without requiring work and attention.
Today was perfect Silences weather, at home working; raining and dreary outside, and I am a "solar powered" person. Somehow this scent makes the rain and clouds okay, the knowledge that little plants are busy underground and will bring back flowers and warmth. I reach for it more often now, but it was an evolution in my senses that are changing, not the scent itself. And no complaints from husband or dogs (I have one that finds certain perfumes fascinating, have yet to find the specific note, guessing maybe a musk?

frusia

This scent brings memories I didn't know I had. It reminds me of childhood, that early stage from which you remember feelings more than actual events. It smells like presence and like kindness, womanly, motherly. It also smells like silence, strangely, but it does.

Maybe it smells like my mother (I was born a year after it was first released, so it's not impossible), or maybe it smells like mother earth - of moss and soil, and plants on a warm and slightly windy autumn morning.

I love it. I'm not sure if I will wear it, but I'm happy to keep my miniature bottle full of some newly discovered memories, for which I don't really have words, but they seem to live in this fragrance.

Naelah

A green woody scent, I only imagine women over 50 wearing this. the bergamot and lime gives it a dominating effect.

Aliciaenelespejo

(I've got the grey box vintage version)
When i decided to blind buy this perfume i knew it was not in my confort zone and i hesitated.
Once it arrived i thought it was too "something" to feel confortable using it (too distant, too herbal, too soapy-old).
I was born in 1985 so this sort of scent is not in my nosebook. I want to educate my nose outside my own time so i knew i have to learn to appreciatte this green bitter scent. But if in the end we could not get along i would sell it.
I wore it 7 times and already really liked it. Its very picky with the climate and mood. But chosen wisely it is amazing. So happy to have it in my collection. Such a breeze between all that syrup!

Sillage and longevity are mild. Very accurate with the name.

It is all i thought before but in a good sense! A beautiful, soapy, elegant scent that smells like an herbal tea. A calming infusion for my nose and my soul.

halalula1234

If Chanel No.19 is that strong independent lawyer, immaculately dressed in her black Chanel Suit, working a court case then Silences is the judge even more powerful, mature, composed, and enigmatic.

Silences is almost like "No.19 Noir or No.19 Nuit" if No.19 were to have a darker less floral flanker, this would be it. The scent of a deep dark foggy forest where it is forever misty and full of mystery, the vegetation is always an intense dark shade of green, and sunlight is rarely able to penetrate through the dense foliage above.

Lavenderrose

I purchased a bottle from ebay. It’s absolutely fine and right up my street as l love No19 and old school fragrance. Does anyone know which is better , the spray within the cap/ or the other ( removable)
Anyway, l used No19 forever in the 90’s - l would say this is very similar, but not as sweet maybe? I haven’t tried a recent version of 19.

bel.gravia

A wonderful SOFT green scent, no sweetness at all. Dewy and rich. A very very very ideal scent for anyone who loves Chanel No. 19 EDT.

diego.lesgart

@Labaloo ... could you tell me please if this fragance has the same vein of Ivoire classic ... I really intrigued about that icon by Balmain

Labaloo

Finally get to compare 'Silences' to 'Chanel No. 19'. I get the similarities... they're both "green" floral chypres... but #19 is more about the rose and citrus; it's "brighter" with a highly-complex base... whereas Silences is all about the bitter galbanum accented by herbal-woody facets. Two competely different fragrances in my book, and I love them both.

alphairone

Holy Galbanum, Batman! This is GREEN, lush, heavy, dewy, bitter, and crisp; gotta love a good use of galbanum resin and oil. Spring flowers of hyacinth, narcissus, and lily of the valley paradoxically sing in the heart of Silences, and as the green recedes, a dusky gray oakmoss reveals its wistful presence in a cloak of wood and ambrette.

I love my green florals, and this one is a stunner. While originally marketed to women, this gendering is no longer relevant today and men wear this in any season with aplomb.

Austrian_in_Denmark

It is hard to review a scent that is absolutely not my cup of tea, but an amazing cup of tea nonetheless.

Silences is green, bitter, soapy, dark, sweet, superstrong, and long-lasting. In the beginning, the bitterness from the galbanum prevails, but after a while the flowers start to sing, and I really mean SING.

I am reminded of Chanel's No 19 - and I can see that many others feel the same. I am also thinking of Jean-Louis Scherrer. Silences smells very high-end. Like the most expensive soap you could get in 1985.

Being a fan of bright or at least sweet perfumes, I am somewhat undeserving of this scent (I have the vintage version, by the way). But if you are into dark, green fragrances, you should try Silences. It really is stunning.

Vegas Pauli

Vintage parfum review: Silences is a dark green, bitter floral which has been done before, but this one is hard to beat. Reminds me of the heavy dark green notes in Sisley eau Soir, hyacinth notes in Tom Ford Ombre Hyacinth, and the clean notes in CHANEL No, 19. The overall effect is lush heavy green that's all bitter fresh and almost no sweetness. This why I find this unisex. It has a timeless quality that's interesting but familiar, you know this type of pungent greenness. Reminds me of a garden in the tropics in high humidity, strong with hints of flowers. This is a noticeable and attention getting smell, it starts slightly loud. Tames down and radiates for hours when worn. This is old school quality. The vintage parfum is a worthy purchase and its not to hard to track down for decent prices. Worthy a blind buy.
PS I've never smelled the current EDP formulation and honestly I'm not too interested. Always go for vintage IMO

upuautiii

This perfume must have been reformulated. I first owned it in the mid eighties. I had the one that came in a grey box, and the bottle had a half circle removable cover. There is no silence about it; the scent screams. I think the name was meant to oppose the scent.

I could swear there is some green chili / pepper in the top. Something spicy I can't identify for certainty.

This is definitely a winter scent. And more of a night than day. I imagine it to be perfect for formal occasions.

Even though it is women, I used to wear it. Occasionally I'd layer it with Fahrenheit. The outcome reminds me of crisp early morning on a foggy day in winter or spring.

I came across a female client in the early 90's who wore something resembling Silences. I asked what she was wearing, she said 'Crystal.' She might've meant Forever Krystle by Carrington. They smelled identical, at least in the sharpness of the top.

Silences must have been reformulated. I bought a new bottle few months ago, after my original ran out. The new one comes as one piece in a black box. Very disappointing. The sharp top is gone. The scent overall is much smoother and definitely much more feminine.

Overall, I loved the original.

UnearthlyApothecary

I have a vintage mini of this. I GET this scent. Silences. Yes the name suits. I was so worried it would be a loud screecher, I’ve been terrified to try this one but equally curious for a long time. There was no need to fear, Silences is soft and contemplative. The galbanum is slightly bitter but not sharp, the green notes and the floral notes all meld into this deep green haze. I think the ambrette really softens this one up. There are a ton of sharp green screechers, Silences proves that you don’t have to shout to be heard. Or smelled :p
Really love it.

Perfection! What I want to smell like always!
I have the PDT (with several backups). It reminds me of something I wore in the 90’s in junior high before I wore proper perfume on the regular. Where has this been all my life?
I love Chanel 19 (EDP and EDT) but I think I like this more. It is so easy to wear. This is green and purple and powdery yet warm. A beautiful composition.

As a few other reviewers below have noted, the jet-black-packaged Silences bears a good resemblance to the ode-to-white fragrance Ivoire de Balmain, which came out a year later in 1979. And yet, some people will swear up and down that they are *nothing* alike. This is due, almost certainly, to the opposing perceptions that each fragrance's name, packaging, and marketing have spoon-fed into consumers' consciousnesses. Take away the white/black marketing duality though, and sniff the two blindly...and they are indeed similar fragrances.

It's funny to think of Silences lovers saying to themselves, "This perfume makes me feel dark and deep and mysterious, like a femme fatale in a dark alley at midnight."

And Ivoire lovers saying to themselves, "This perfume makes me feel so pure and innocent like I'm freshly bathed with Ivory soap."

And yet, they smell so similar to one another, despite the vastly differing emotions they invoke with their polar opposite packaging and promotional strategies. It's interesting.

Ivoire does have a stronger sweet lily note though, IMO.

A sparkling galbanum, narcissus, and ambrette.

It's a fizzy galbanum with mild sour yet bitter narcissus. It's greenish and very mossy. Vetiver, and lily of the valley are playing quite a big role in here . The musk mellow is quite big when it calms down and gives a very grassy greenish spray. It goes very bitter, sour, & musky when it settles down.

It resembles the 70s hippy era well with that sweaty green animalic notes. This is the vintage blend i am reviewing. Cute.

This is a review for the vintage "parfum de toilette" (grey box, sprayer under the removable cap, "Jacomo" written only on the box, not on the bottle):

It opens very sharp, sour, borderline vinegar-y with an earthy galbanum and aldehydes (even if not listed in the notes, I swear there is), making it lean on the masculine side.
No worries, after 10/15min, the galbanum rounds a bit to let its bitter greenness shine and open the stage to a majestic floral accord, led by a strong hyacinth and a hint of rose. Smoothly, the blend will become slightly powdery (the iris I guess), but will stay balanced without ever falling into the baby diaper territory.
In the drydwon, the egdes get smoothed a bit by a soapy musk, moss and some shy woody notes in the background (cedar and vetiver I guess), and takes a slightly feminine direction.

Aside of the cheap-smelling early opening, I can only confirm the similarities with Chanel No.19, in the drydown. Ok, let's be honest... No.19 is a small step higher in terms of quality and performance, but a big step higher in terms of price (3 times more).
Like for No.19 EDT, it's perfectly unisex, and easy for me (a man) to pull it off.
Overall performance on my skin is questionable though, with poor projection and average longevity. Given its affordability, overspraying in 2 layers is very feasible, and will promote the projection to moderate during the first couple of hours. (But again, I have a 1st formulation bottle - thus produced at least 15 years ago - so it may have lost a bit of strength).

I simply love it, and after the slight disappointment of Jacomo de Jacomo, I now understand the historical importance of this house.
Silences PDT for the week, and No.19 EDT for the weekends? Deal!

What a wonderful surprise this turned out to be! A lovely swapmate of mine sent me a decant of Silences. I've been branching out into greener fragrances (no pun intended), but even so, I was surprised at how much I love this one. I immediately looked on line and found a pre-reformulated full bottle for under $20. I don't get any unpleasant bitterness, even with the first spray - just enough to make interesting. It has been years and years since I last tried No. 19 because I thought I hated it. I think my nose just wasn't sophisticated enough to appreciate it, or many other green florals and chypres. I can't wait to try it again, but if it's as close to Silences as the reviews indicate, then there won't be a need to spend $100+ when I can spend significantly less and not sacrifice any quality. Not for everyone, but everyone should try, even if green florals and chypre are not your thing.

I just got this tester in the mail and wow, does it ever remind me of Chanel N19, it is amazing. I am reluctant to spend a lot on fragrance these days, there are so many to choose from and so many seem exorbitantly priced. Not so this time. Silences is pretty much what I loved about N19 and if you are looking for a less expensive version you won’t be disappointed. Beautiful woodsy, fresh yet nuanced scent. Very happy with this one.

This is truly a lovely fragrance. Sweet aldehydes, mossiness, airy florals, and green, green, green. And it is also as light as a whisper. like a breeze through a forest. Amazing that I love this so much since I'm usually drawn to full bodied Floral and Orientals; so, this is quite the departure for me. Though light, it has so much depth. People compare it to Chanel No. 19, which I like, but don't love. That is not the case here.
I get no soap as some others find but there is a spicy waxiness (only way that I can describe it) that I believe is how the aldehydes, galbanum, and spice smell on first spray. It's not offensive and quickly passes, then becoming an airy and earthy floral on me. The galbanum, vetiver and oakmoss with the delicate hyacinth, spicy rose and powdery iris has me sighing with delight all day. It is truly beautiful. I have the pdt and think it is too soft for winter. I'm keeping this strength for the dog days of summer. It will be perfect then. In the meantime, I just purchased a 3.4oz. edp. I can't wait! I think I finally may have found my signature scent.

maneki_neko

I have a new EdT demonstration flacon.

The initial spray is a soapy rose rounded out by an oakmoss bed that settles seconds later. After about ten to twenty minutes I strongly sense the hyacinth, which is to my nose precisely like the one in Revlon's Charlie. I reckon my skin must project hyacinth whenever it shows up, because that's what dominates. After about an hour the drydown gives off faint hints of woody iris and vetiver. It stops just short of sweet, safely within the bounds of mossy chypres. But it is powdery on me--barely there, hints of soft green goodness that live up to its name. This is a serene, composed, elegantly simple fragrance.

I tend toward vanilla, spicy, ambery, incensey sorts, but when I do flirt, it's typically with something green. I think I made a good choice here, as it's just the right amount of powdery wood to satisfy my balsamic tastes, but sharply green enough to take me out of my element. Unfortunately, I'm accustomed to, and prefer a little more projection than what Silences provides (again, it's an apt name). I plan on wearing it on relaxing, calming, solitary evenings reading and sipping something hot, or writing in my journal.

Edited to add: I too was reminded of Anais Anais at first spritz, but to me AA quickly turns into a big loud lily bomb. Nothing like demure Silences.

About 12 years ago I had Silences edt and now I tried the edp. I'm not sure if this is only a reformulated version or both edp and edt existed before as well, but the two are not the same fragrance for sure. The old edt is really reminiscent to Chanel No19 edt but maybe not as sofisticated as the Chanel but this new edp is more rounded, more wearable and beautifully feminine fragrance. It has character, power but not overpowering. It's name fits it very well: it's silent but there no need to be harsh and loud because quality and pure beauty makes it all. I love it and will degófinetely purchase a whole bottle.

RozaMoisevna

I have a vintage EDT and the hyacinth note in this is very sophisticated together with rose and hints of civet (although not mentioned in the pyramid) but mostly in sillage, not directly on skin. The perfume is unbelievably airy, with wonderful sillage, like a refreshing spring breeze. Smells very expensive and way better than the currrent Chanel 19.

taureanrage69

Everything about this perfume is devastatingly gorgeous, from the name (haunting and very fitting), the rounded black bottle with the shiny gold letters, and then, there's the scent. Silences, what a perfectly chosen name for this beauty. She doesn't flaunt herself, she is not an attention seeker. She's the hauntingly beautiful girl that hangs out in the library and stays in the corner because she's shy and doesn't want to draw attention to herself. But once you give her a chance, she sings to you and then you never forget her. Unique and special, the very greenest of any perfume I have or have tried; not grassy green, but deep foresty, mossy, woody green. As dark of a green as I can imagine a perfume to be. And it's stunningly tenacious, so please know this if you're going to try it. I love it so I'm prejudiced, but this may be a love it or hate it scent due to the style, era, etc. Although I don't wear her often because I think she's so precious that I don't want to become completely familiar and accustomed to her, she will always have a place in my perfume-loving heart.

dsmercoco

Wonderful aldehyde soapy goodness. It's amazing how close it is to No.19 (which is a top 10 fav of mine) but for a fraction of the price, no kidding that good! It doesn't project like Chanel but the longevity is decent. It wafts in and out as a skin scent but oh my goodness its powdery floral fresh. I can now save my Chanel Poudre for special occasions and wear this without abandon. Iam one happy girl!

adrienn99

now am experiencing one of those rare moments when unable to formulate a solid opinion on a fragrance. this one seems to be a shapeshifter!
yesterday when I first tested, initially I got a bright blast of citrusy aromatic goodness and the drydown powdery and green.
now today i had the green powdery blast first (mmostly oakmoss if I'm right) and now it's turning into a slightly sweet floral...
very intriguing, will need to test it more!

A moody, melancholic green. I have the reformulated version (name repeated on the box) and it's very bracing, quickly drying down into a clean, soapy green scent. I detect little powder but it's quite dry.

It's cold and powerful, like enormous dock leaves and tiny white flowers before heavy rain begins. A forest floor covered in nameless green plants that barely see the sun through the canopies.

It's somber. That's the best way I can describe it and it suits its name perfectly.

Averycarr

I wanted so badly to like this fragrance. I purchased this blindly based on reviews and my love for Chanel no 19. I don’t know if I just got a bad bottle, but it is nothing but men’s aftershave to me. Astringent and cloying and unrelenting. Nothing like the green floral powder I get from no 19, it's just not for me. If anyone wants a bottle of this that has only been sprayed several times, please message me. I will give it to you for free.

aura_therapy

Seeing as how Eternity was my signature for years, I thought I knew what a green fragrance was. But this perfume took it to a whole other level. WOW THIS IS GREEN. The first blast was so bitter it scared me. I was having flashbacks of the time I tried to drink dandelion tea from the health food store (I had never thrown tea out until then). But thankfully this mellows down into a manageable cleanliness over the course of 30 minutes to an hour. I'm on the fence whether or not I like it. I definitely wouldn't spray right before I walked out the door, I would be self-conscious, but I think the casual non-perfumistas I encounter throughout my day would enjoy wafts of the mid to drydown.

Aviana Verene

Whoa. The first spray was a really strong blast of galbanum and cassia. I was worried it might just be too green for me. But after it dried down, about an hour later, it's powdery and soapy and earthy. I can't really pick out any single note, it's just a nice, clean scent without being sharp or screechy. I've never tested Chanel No. 19 so I can't say this compares but it's very lovely.

(this review is for a vintage mini. not sure of the year)

PeteH

As so many others have noted, this is a No 19 EDP clone that is completely worthy of a blind buy if you're into green fragrances. No 19, being a Chanel frangrance, is formulated on a much higher budget, with the result that it is richer in the middle and lasts quite a bit longer. Silences, although a little roughened around the edges, is both lovely and loveable.

Also makes an entirely suitable masculine.

Now if only someone can come up with a way to make the gorgeous, bright-green tang of the galbanum top-note last for six hours... Heaven!

Glarnere

I blindbought it and like it.
It is classy and green, but on my skin it also gets spicy! Does anyone else gets that? It´s spicy, i would say dark green with character.

Rosie Cotton

I am so grateful to my fellow fragranticans for the time and energy they put into reviews. I live very far from decent perfume shopping and I am largely homebound with a disability so I don't get to test many perfumes unless I order samples and I often can't find ones I want.

But, looking at these reviews, I felt like this was a perfume for me so I blind bought it. It's just glorious. You all described it beautifully. It is purple and green and lush and clean and magic. It's fresh green grass and fat sunny roses. I am just delighted.

carrie.nellis

Oh my Silences is very similar to Chanel No 19 ..I have always been into vintage perfumes such as Cinnabar , Youth Dew , Ciara , Opium , Shalimar and of course Chanel perfumes .. My mother influenced me in my tastes of perfumes how I remember the 1st day of 2nd grade she dabbed just a tiny bit of Chanel 19 and I felt so special but as I grew older I ordinarily favor sweet and spicy fragrances so I have to admit this is really my 1st fresh clean scent and I'm totally loving it ... Since my thyroid has started messing up perfumes just don't mix well with my skin or even last long so I refuse to spend a ton of money on any perfume since I discovered Angel would barely last a hour on me ... This perfume lasted about 5 hours , sillage on me is arm length ... But keep in mind hormonial imbalances can make a perfume smell out of this world or in my case a perfume like Opium makes me smell like I poured cinnamon oil on me.. If you are looking for a fresh clean scent similar to Chanel no 19 I suggest trying this based on how it smells on me and my family's opinion ...

mapache

Green, mossy,galbanum..vetiver..floral...middle notes.
And then the woody/green aspect.
Yes, similar to Chanel 19....and the vibe of Jean Louis Scherrer,Paloma Picaso, EL Knowing. My cup of tea, for sure. A great bargain fo what your getting.

There is a beautiful and evocative passage from Paul Goodman's 1972 book Speaking and Language that details nine different kinds of silences; among them are "...the fertile silence of awareness, pasturing the soul, whence emerge new thoughts"; the alive silence of alert perception, ready to say, “This… this…”; the musical silence that accompanies absorbed activity; [and] the silence of peaceful accord with other persons or communion with the cosmos."(The entire quote, while not relevant to this review, is lovely and warrants a Google search.)

What a perfect way to describe this fragrance! I imagine a glade, dappled with sunlight, surrounded by a forest, green and full, populated by that enchanting class of animals: woodland creatures. My silence is fertile and alive, the creatures' silence is musical, and our collective silence is peaceful. I could not articulate the feelings this scent evokes more perfectly: the silences of a beautiful day spent communing with nature.

Annabear

Fresh green floral, almost grassy but in an exquisite way. Yes it's a little old fashioned, but probably because it doesn't screech sweetness and fruit the way some of today's fragrances do. I remember seeing this back in the '70s and '80s and never tried it then.
Perhaps I am now the right vintage to appreciate this classic.

missm2u

What a fascinating fragrance! I was looking for something green and certainly found it. And I can definitely understand why it's beloved of some and hated by others - and why it shouldn't be considered an "easy" perfume to wear. I tried Silences for the first time today, and had to share a few impressions. I write for a living, and with perfume, I'm not thinking about technical things like analyzing the various notes. It's the emotional impact of scent that appeals to me. Silences takes me into the garden, where I'm pulling weeds with my mom. The first spray is a little shocking. There's nothing sweet, or even musky. To my nose, it starts with bitter green note that reminds me of cut dandelions. There are a few flowers around the edges, but it's the bitter green that lasts through all the stages of the perfume's life on my skin. I keep sniffing, and wondering why it's so appealing. Maybe it's that the perfumer didn't make it easy to appreciate Silences. You have to keep working at it to notice the lovely florals around the green heart.

BottledUp

I blind bought a vintage bottle of this for pretty cheap and I really disliked it for a long time. The opening is super sharp, and you really shouldn't smell it at all for at least five minutes because it's so harsh.

But I've recently given silences another chance... and WOW!This fragrance is very evocative of a wet forest, and it's so much fun! Overall, I'd say it's bitter and mossy, yet somehow sparkling and light.

It makes me think of gardens I've daydreamed about.

Definitely worth giving a try, but If you're new to chypres I would definitely sample first. Apparently Silences isn't produced anymore (it's now Silences Sublime or whatever). But the vintages and even more recent bottles are very easy to find online.

You'll know if it's a vintage if the sprayer is under a cap that you can take off (this version has more sillage and longevity). The newer bottles have the sprayer as an actual part of the "cap".

gtabasso

So unique and interesting. Not quite anything. It goes on a floral aldehyde then quickly gets green and a bit chypre then very herbaceous and woody. This scent is dry, green, aromatic, and cedar in the base. No flowers after the top.

MrsPress

This is a definite no for me. Too floral for my liking...the floral notes give this a scented hairspray vibe. This smells very 80's to me but not in a good way, like say Diors Poison. I was really under the impression that the green notes dominated this fragrance from the reviews, but not on my skin...another blind buy gone wrong, glad it's inexpensive.

gracenote-floralspice

Silences. Certainly a green forestry reverence to things natural. For me this starts with something of Chanel NO 19, though that's where it ends. The dry down for me is a bitter and sharp forest. Certainly not the powdery soft cool restraint of Chanel 19. Rather the restraint of a silent forest unspoilt by careless hands and machines.

I can imagine this being beautifully cool on a summer day. For now I am experimenting with it as an autumn fragrance.

It is my foray into a new world of fragrance, my fragrances normally not so green. Yet that is my fragrance journey since the passing of my husband. A place of experimenting, like trying my wings in the world. This to me is a loan ranger sort of fragrance.

Long live Silences!

Germanblonde

It is SO harsh and untamed. A wild beast. Way too rough for my nose. I never give a perfume just one try. I tried this several times with long intervals - but it just won't grow on me. But like my mom says: "There is a lid for every pot." Well, this lid absolutely doesn't fit on me. If I never have to smell this frag again, I will surely not burst out into tears. My colleague, who loves to get gifted those frags that I cannot deal with, declined my offer for this freebie. So I just threw it into the trash. This could not even function as a room spray for me or her!

Sherihan

Im smelling a miniature I just received in mail, it is of course a vintage (recent Silences doesn't make miniatures I guess) . It smells nicer, deeper, creamier and classier than the new formula, I know it is boring now that everyone is talking about "old/new formula" and it is kind of cheesy terminology, but here we are, a vintage juice in my left hand, and a new/out of factory one in my right palm... the old/expired liquid wins my nose's Oscar. Im searching for some vintage actual bottles soon....

Maodo

If you like Silences, you may like Murasaki from Shiseido as well.

jessi.1

Adore it! The green (galbunum?) is refreshing and comforting at the same time. I enjoy sharing my love of scent with my family, and this falls into the "family scent" category in my collection. This means that it is affordable and well liked enough by everyone that I allow the others in the home to use it whenever they like. Reminds me of being a kid in the Midwest on a July night.

ramrell

This was a blind buy sample, and I wasn't sure what it would smell like, but was sold on the look of the bottle alone. When it arrived, I immediately fell in love with it because it was different from anything I've ever had. I knew it wouldn't be my every day fragrance since my wardrobe consists of over 70 other wonderful juices, but since I was searching for a "biker" fragrance I'd decided that Jacomo's Silences would be THAT perfume. I doused myself in this magnificent stuff this morning, jumped on my motorcycle, and off I went. I could smell it in the breeze, and there was nothing silent about it. The best part....even after all the outside aftermath, it was still on strong when I reached my destination. It smells awesome on clothing, especially paired with leather....I feel like a million dollars.

Highly recommended for anyone in the biker world looking for something with staying power while outdoors. Lest I forget to mention....I ordered a 3.4 oz bottle.

misk25

Smucci

Chanel 19's working class cousin. I like it a lot. The dry down is a bit metallic and generically woody.

Juliana6

I think it's a classic perfume for an adult (I mean the state of mind here), strong and independent woman. The opening on me is quite sharp (but it calms down soon), fresh and green. Like a mixture of herbal tea, some strong alcohol and some gas bubbles to make it sparkling (I guess, it must be the citrus notes). After about 5 minutes it becomes less sharp, more wearable, slightly sweeter (but I wouldn't describe "Silences" as a sweet perfume), the sharp edges become rounder. To be honest, I don't smell any flowers, except a beautiful, aromatic hyacinth. The base is aromatic, still green, but less strong and woody, which gives to this perfume that recognizable, a bit masculine, aromatic and a bit serious Chanel vibe.
It's like a book -you have red it and you keep thinking about it all the time. Like a black, glossy grand piano makes you imagine the kind of music played on it.
I think you must at least understand and like Chanel creations, "Cabochard" by Gress, "Ivoire" by Balmain, the classic scents by Guerlain ("Mitsouko" or "Heure Bleue"), "First" by Van Cleef & Arpels and other chypre type scents. It won't be my favorite perfume, but now and then, for a special mood when I just want to have a moment of peace, this will do perfectly.

jolieshirley

Pope Jean

Oh how I wish I got what most of the reviewers got out of this fragrance. On first spray, this is overwhelming. Powerful, almost nauseating, sharp greens. And I love greens, so its very odd for me not to completely enjoy one. To me, this is green at the start, then within a few moments its piratically gone. It turns into a powdery green floral which is nice but... its so close to the skin that I need to have my nose right on my wrist to smell it. After the initial application - no projection. At all. It was inexpensive, so I could reapply, but the way it acts when I first spray it on, I almost don't want to punish myself with that again.

I'm glad I experienced it, but I don't think this will be one of my favorites.

Sanskilainen

Elegant greenness with woody dry down. Silences is perfect for day wear as it is non obtrusive yet makes its presence known. I have never been charmed by Chanel 19, maybe vintage would do it, and now I don't need to. Silences calms me down and lifts me up at the same time. I normally go for oriental type of perfume but have only recently started gathering some greenness around me. I can see the references to Vent Vert vintage as well, but I gave mine away as it did not give me the same pleasure as the Jacomo does. And the bottle. Pure love. The round black bottle is a darling and I remember it from my childhood visits at the chemists, even though my mom never wore it as far as I remember. Do get it as it is a rip off and the day it vanishes from the market will be a sad day.

chyprespace

If vintage Chanel No19 and vintage Ivoire de Balmain had a baby and put it on a bed of vintage Estee Lauder Private Collection, it would smell like vintage Jacomo Silences - which goes for very little on Ebay. Wonderful. If you love those perfumes in their vintage edition and are on a budget, this is the one to get.

More smoky and leathery on the dry-down that either Chanel 19 or Ivoire. It's really a perfect perfume in my opinion.

PinkRainbow

What an experience of deja-vu! Silences is classy, understated, and beautiful, and reminds me very much of an Avon scent I used to use called "Fantasque".

piggyluv

Fantastic green cypre. Reminiscent of the vintage Ivoire de Balmain, heavy with oakmoss and vetivier. Manages to maintain its sharp green notes in the dry down; which makes it a refreshing change from the usual vanilla/sandalwood/amber/musk bases seemingly all modern perfumes dry down as. Longevity and silage is amazing, this is a personal favorite. Not only is it gender neutral, I personally would love to smell this on a man :)

Ferminadaza

Hmmm....just received an order of a vintage Jacomo Silences. When other reviewers said "green", I expected something on par with the green effect that I find in modern scents like Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDT. I was excited about seeing an earlier example of such a "green" scent. Instead upon initial spray, I find a fatty, slightly indolic jasmine. The overall effect is reminiscent of Cacharel's Anais Anais. I love Anais Anais and often wear it during the fall, however Jacomo though reminiscent of the Cacharel fragrance lacks the depth and the indolic jasmine comes off as watery and non-descript. It's the water left in the vase after the flowers of Anais Anais have been removed. It's the remnants of Anais Anais that remain on the skin after a night of debauchery and a good long shower. I'm not in love, I'm mildly annoyed because I keep waiting for the famed Silences to show up.

2 HOURS LATER: Mid review, I decided to make a Sonic run because well...life is just better with brightly colored artificially flavored frozen sugar water. Yes. Yes, it is. Anyway, during my drive there and throughout the other errands that I ended up doing as well, I kept getting wafts of this tender but strong fresh meadow jasmine. Initially I thought it was some expensive scent in one of the boutiques I looked in (yeah, because I never end up going just one place, lol) but suddenly I realized that it was me! I'd only sprayed the scent on part of the back of my hand. It's still reminiscent of Anais Anais, but instead of being the knock off version, it's the wise grandmother that knows just how to impress without being showy and overdone. Niiiice. The indoles are smartly kept in check (much as I love Anais Anais, that is one of the issues I have with the initial portion of the dry down--waiting for those fecal notes to go away) such that I get to the best part of the scent much quicker.

I might need to invest in a back up bottle of this...

ETA: Longevity...I have the vintage formula so that might affect my perspective, but you don't need much and it seems to last for a while. Let's put it this way, I sprayed it on my hand because I'd already put on my perfume for the day. Aquolina Black Sugar.

Well, wouldn't you know Silences somehow trumped Black Sugar in all of it's smoky leather oudness! It was like the 70s just came and said, "Scram, make like a tree and leave".... and so the oud (likely artificial) left

ETA 2: Reviewed the notes for both Anais and Silences----interesting that they were released in the same year and interesting that they have near the same base notes and very similar heart notes. Anais has more top notes. Another thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned: according to the listed base notes, Silences would be considered a green chypre. Explains why I enjoy it so much as well, the vetiver/oakmoss/sandalwood combination.

izainbox

Lush, fresh, green, mysterious and misty. There's coldness and darkness in it. It lasts long on my skin 8+hrs. The level of freshness is like the scent of irish spring bar, but more sophisticated (I mean it in a good way).

Overall, I like it :)

Would I recommend it for those who like fresh and greens scents? YES.

moodypaws

Whether I'm wearing Shalimar or Silences, people around me punctually exclaim "You smell of roses!"... As I'm not a saint, I must simply accept that my skin amplifies rose, which is fine for oriental fumes but personally disappointing with green or chypre fragrances.

I love the sharp galbanum in the opening and was hoping that it would lead to narcissus or lily of the valley rather than a dewy rose. In this respect, on me Silences plays almost exactly like Chanel no 19, probably because the differing notes fade into the background on my skin.

Still, it is a lovely fragrance and do not regret my blind purchase at all. I will not wear it as often as Cristalle when in the mood for green but it's too nice to be given away.

BTW, mine is a pre reformulation parfum de toilette in the matte grey box.

EDIT: Green makes a welcome return in the drydown paired with a slight sweetness, nice!

Kentington

Silences seems to be a version of Piguet's Bandit without the signature Isobutyl Quinoline leather note or any of the animalic qualities. Both perfumes have a strong, sharp Galbanum opening, with some heavier, rounder floral notes to temper the topnotes, and both of them have a tremendous sense of 'wetness' to them. This isn't a damp, moldy basement wetness either. Silences and Bandit both remind me very much of the rainforests in the Cascades here in Washington State - that permanently green, permanently moist feeling of fresh earth and living plants.

I would also offer that the similarity between Silences and No. 19 is purely superficial, to my nose. I actually find it has more to do with vintage Vent Vert, because of the Chanel's strong iris/orris quality. Silences never becomes powdery like the No. 19, all through the dry down there is an exquisite botanical greenness akin to Vent Vert's. The Balmain's heart notes have an odd Marigold feel (you can almost smell pollen in that perfume) where the Jacomo is more traditionally floral. Both share a pleasant Hyacinth/Muguet note.

This is one of those perfumes that I would recommend to anyone starting a collection. It's a perfect example of a green fragrance, it's strikingly different than the majority of mass-market 'designer' releases, and it's outstandingly inexpensive. My 1oz Parfum de Toilette bottle cost me a whole $12. At that price, how could you not?

I received my sample 10 minutes ago and I am thrilled, so I had to review it immediately! Silences is just the way I imagined it. The initial spray is really sharp blast of galbanum and hyacinth. Only after a minute the sharpness disappears and a beautiful scent of iris and vetiver reveals to my nose and guess what - i can't stop sniffing my wrist! The scent continue to evolve and I can smell delicate floral and woodsy notes. Silences is elegant and serene perfume, which on me has a moderate sillage. It's really reminicsent of Chanel 19 and very pleasant to wear. Straight to my want list.
Edit: HALEY-SUE, you may swap it, instead of throwing it away.

HALEY-SUE

It has nothing in it that would be a turn-off for me. Yet...I can't like it. The first blast is off-putting. After that dies down, I can't help feel it smells like a cologne that has 'gone bad'. Green, but like a green infused with a chemical. Odd.
I have no doubt it would be perfect for most.
I always check the notes before purchasing,
but this one and Cabochard (both have appealing list of fragrance notes) just go way overboard somehow.
I'll likely throw it out. I hate to throw expensive colognes away even if I don't like them-- but this one and Cabochard were both very inexpensive, so it's a bye bye to Silences.

I received this scent, an full ounce parfum, as a training gift from the vendor when I worked at Sak's 5th Ave in NYC, back in the early 80's--God--those were the days! I still have a few drops in the bottle and, amazingly, it is still wearable! It is one of the freshest, cleanest and least harsh green fragrances I have ever worn. It reminds me of Patou's original "Vacances" but with less acid and more sweetness! It has a soft, elegant quality and lasts very well on me. I will be sad to see it go!

Peachysugarbuns

Silences reminds me of Climat by Lancome; however, Climat is the feeling of a fresh mountain breeze rolling over a sunny foothill, while Silences is that same foothill, only shrouded in dark gray storm clouds and tense with impending electrostatic discharge. Like Climat, the scent of Silences provokes a feeling, making it difficult for me to dissect the notes in a cerebral way.

Silences' opening is a crack of lightning! Sharp, sharp, sharp and so green and galbanum-y that it's surprising! Soon, like the pull of gravity on precipitation, Silences settles beautifully on the skin - it is relieved from its opening. This is wholly a serious composition, utilizing mountain flowers and forest greens in a spicy, dark and deliberate way, maintaining a lush and shadowed feeling throughout. It is painfully pretty.

Chypres are my favorite because they are difficult for me to describe. I try to decipher the genre but it wriggles out of my grip, smacks me on the face, scampers away and leaves me in a heap, trying to sort through all the settings I'm envisioning and the emotions I am feeling. Good stuff. Silences is awesome.

Museumgal

This is an extremely sharp scent to open -- with the particular resin, green notes and oakmoss being prominent. Astringent, soap like, and very green. It calms down a bit as it dries down but it can be a little harsh all the way though. I was hoping to get more of the florals but it was hard to distinguish them as they're mostly also green florals and tended to blend into the rest of the composition.

I was sniffing my sample of Chanel No. 19, enjoying it too much, and I figured I'd look here to see if there was anything that was similar. Many people mentioned this much cheaper scent so I ordered a bottle off ebay. My version is the parfum de toilette which I've heard is the older, better one and I am totally in love with this! It does smell a lot like the Chanel but, as others have said, this has a rougher feel. It has a green bite to it that is a little humid, wild, and free. I do wish that the sillage/longevity were a little better but I get about 4-6 hours before I feel the need to reapply which isn't too bad. I'm sure it's much better than the reformulated Chanel. A real gem and I'm so glad that I found it!

Kshan

I bought a miniature of this and really like it. It's great by itself or layered with something else. My son, however, claims it smells like Windex. Oh, well, what does he know?

silences is a sister of Chanel N.19, definitely shares the same DNA, but is a different persona. While the Chanel counterpart is more sleek and polished, the leather and iris playing their part, silences is more rugged, bitter, sharp yet floral and powdery.

Silences as opposed to N.19 is much less polished, the wood and green herbs are more in their natural form.
Silences is more assertive due it's more biting green, N.19, especially past its top notes is more of a dead green calm. I also prefer to smell silences from afar rather than up close. Silences is fiercely green and retro, and really befits it's name as it suggests a dark green dead quiet forest. One of the few remaining great green fumes.

"Silences" is, to me, an achingly beautiful chypre floral. I love chypres, and often lament that I was born too late for their heyday. They are especially liable to show a loss of complexity and identity when forced into compliance with present day fragrance manufacture regulations, which is a situation I devoutly hope to see corrected some day...

It opens with a gorgeous galbanum and delightfully sparky notes of spice---cinnamon, cloves. Then bergamot and oakmoss pop in, with a hint of vetiver and sandalwood. Silences is a bit like Magie Noire in that the base notes appear early after spraying, then give way to heart notes, and reassert themselves later. A few minutes into wearing, a floral chord weaves its way in, resolving into a seductive rose note. Long into wearing, the rose remains, eventually just a whisper trailing over the fine green-chypresque drydown. As stated above, I would be as likely to call Silences a chypre floral as a floral green. I found the sillage quite moderate, especially after drydown was complete, although by no means faint or lacking. And it lasted very well indeed. I have the vintage parfum de toilette...

I have no idea why the creator of this perfume chose to call it "Silences", although I like the name instinctively. For no good reason, I am reminded of the fairy tales in which a suitor must identify his bride from amongst a number of apparently identical---or at least, confusingly similar---ladies. Perhaps this fancy arose from all the other perfumes that I thought of when I was first attempting to analyze Silences...Is it she, the tall, cold one in the green veil? No, that's Chanel No. 19. The next one, who answers to Paloma? No, she is not green enough. Not Coriandre---she carries no flowers, and is altogether too light. The sister with the man's name, Jean-Louis S., has some of the same clothing on, and for a moment he hesitates; but no. The one in cobalt blue is tricky; she has some green notes woven into her crown too, and some rose at her breast...but no, she is Niki. The sorceress sister stands aloof; no confusing her in her aura of Magie Noire. Unerringly, he turns to the true bride, revealed by her emerald robe and warm rose heart...Silence has spoken. She may have many sisters, but she is uniquely beautiful.

If I could be assured of a never-ending supply of this in the vintage formulation, I would drown myself in Silences all summer long...

Walking Unicorn

EDT: This started out with a blast of bright, tart greens, oakmoss and bergamot with some light, indistinguishable florals in the background. After about 20 minutes the tart greens subsided slightly but only enough to expose a freshly cut rose bouquet mixed with some hyacinth, iris and vetiver. Then, after about an hour this became a dark, dewy, medieval forest. I was waiting for the evil queen to come by in her horse drawn carriage.

In the end, I find that I like Silences better than Chanel no19. It is a surprisingly complex perfume of many moods and it is much more adventurous. I love it!

I've been looking at Silences for some time, but always ended up buying something else. I recently found a tester bottle for a very low price and finally purchased - WOW! I love it! This is a truly green floral, not just something with a bit of citrus in the top and a tiny bit of galbanum and vetiver like some I've tried. It is indeed a walk through a summer forest as other reviewers have said. A forest where it has recently rained, with the scents of aromatic mosses and leaves rising from the earth and scattered wildflowers adding their scent too. This is THE green floral for me!

I am reviewing the vintage EDT version:

I think the vintage version could easily be a high end Niche in today's standards. This smells so very familiar to me and it's got quite the vintage vibe to it without being old smelling. By old I mean dated. I really think of a deep green forest with leaves and grass and moist soil. It smells rich, classy and expensive. I'll be damn if this EDT after 10 washings is still clinging to my skin. I don't know if this is something I would personally wear not because it is offensive it is just not me. I really have a true appreciation for vintage fragrances, the quality and ingredients used in them. I wish they were still made this way. I kid you not I can still smell the aroma coming off my hands after 10 washings using Dawn dish soap!

lirael00

Perfect for men, but I would never want to wear it myself. It smells like a shower gel with some herbs. I think the problem is oakmoss as I discovered that the fragrances that are too masculine for me always have oakmoss in it. It's a fresh clean unisex fragrance, but there's nothing sexy or femminine about it.

Part 1: Jacomo Silences: A walk through the ancient forest...

This is a beautiful, real example of a Chypre perfume with an emphasis on the word "green". I really get more of the green notes than the florals with this one. The oakmoss, vetiver, bergamot, the classic galbanum and the accompanying floral notes of watery hyacinth and soft jasmine, iris & lilly-of-the-valley.

What I get from spraying is a very rich, slightly dusty green floral vibe. This "dusty", slightly "bitter" note comes from the galbanum, a resin from a desert plant which is musty and damp and bitter, but also slightly smooth and sweet. I think what balances this "bitter green" is the use of the florals, especially the iris/orris root. The iris is used in another famous fragrance No. 19 by Chanel. But I find that here the dry-down is richer and a little more complex. It's really nice.

Immediately this fragrance reminds me of spring and summer... in the forest. During these months the forest has a certain smell of damp and drying grass and leaves, and moss from the trees, and the smell where there is a lake of river or swamp, with all the animals living there and in the trees and grass. Like the full circle of nature. This fragrance is like two children playing in the summer forest, all day hiding in and climbing trees, catching frogs, singing songs all day, laughing. There is a feeling of "childhood innocence" to me here. But if you have not had this kind of childhood, then imagine it is also like a walk in the mountains, with the tall trees along your path, as you walk, rest, camp, make a fire, all throughout your journey. It also reminds me of the great forest of Europe, Asia, and North America. Especially the ancient forests of Europe, which the early ancestors used to live in, and which covered the whole continent from the sea to the ocean. It's very nostalgic.

Overall, I think if you are a "green" or "outdoors" person, who loves the smell of nature and being in nature itself, then you will like this one. For me I do not really see it so much as a "formal" perfume, but depending on the situation yes it is versatile enough to be used for that, and it will add character and complexity to your presence. In my opinion it can be worn all year round, but especially in the spring and early summer, I think it would fit perfectly then... and also the late winter, where it will remind you of the smell of pine trees outside. Do I recommend it? Yes! If you like the description above, then yes. But just remember, it has a personality of it's own so you have to make sure you like it and can become friends with it. Some people say it's too sharp and green. But for others it will fit just right. Give it time, wear it outside for a few days, and you'll see what I mean. A classic for sure!

Part 2: A tale of two sisters... Chanel No.19 & Jacomo Silences

Now, I want to compare between Chanel No. 19 and Jacomo Silences, as these perfumes are often compared together. Let's first start by saying that No. 19 was first, and so most other "similar" perfumes are descended or "inspired" by that one. But there is something about Silences that I like, which No. 19 doesn't have... and that is an entirely different character and personality. From the start these two are very different. Put it this way, if they were "sisters", then No. 19 (the older sister) would be the wealthy, successful rich woman of society. She has married someone rich, she lives in a nice, expensive house, she hosts dinner parties wearing her perfect black dress and pearl necklace and earrings. She hangs out with rich, wealthy people in society. She has perfect white skin, like a Greek statue, perfect hair, perfect nails. Perfect life. But, she is cold, she is quietly unhappy. She has everything but she feels like she has no control. Like her rich, successful life has been "planned" for her by others. She smiles for guests, and laughs politely, but when she takes off her make-up at night in her mirror, she sometimes wants to cry.

Her younger sister is Silences. This one you could call a "free spirit". She is an artist and was once a beautiful model. She is a painter. She lives in a small, cute house by the river. She goes for a run every morning with her dog. She does not take everything in life too seriously, but she enjoys every minute of her life. She spends most of her time outdoors, in nature. She loves being in nature, running, painting, enjoying the different seasons. She loves who she wants, and she lives each day to the full. Cooking, being artistic, with the dog, out in the woods. She has no regrets in life. She does not have the money that her older sister "acquired" by marrying a rich man. She does not smell so expensive like her older sister, but she has character, and a big heart. She does not want anything more in her life, and she is happy.

To me these are the differences. They are both green, both have an iris note, but this note is unbeatable in the Chanel, and is powdery, floral and smells clean, polished and expensive. The Jacomo smells "greener", like you are in the forest outside, with the smell of herbs and green leaves which the Chanel doesn't have. Basically, if you are an "active" person, or if you have memories of childhood in the countryside, then you will like and enjoy Silences. But if you want to smell the smell of "perfume", or want something "posh" or "expensive", then go for No. 19. Both are great choices. I think the Jacomo is a little more relaxed and carefree, but if you want to impress or are in a very formal situation, then go for the Chanel. Both are masterpieces!

I bought two vintage 3.0 oz Parfums de Toilette. This is a gorgeous composition. I do not see the resemblance to Chanel's no. 19. What this perfume reminds me of in Niky de Saint Phalle's eponymous perfume and Estee Lauder's Private Colection. Maybe the current reformulation is different. Anyway, this is a stunning perfume, one of the very best green compositions ever.

What a wonderful scent! Not at all what I had expected. Thank you so much for all your reviews, or otherwise I would never have tested it. It is so soft, green and soapy on my skin, really nice. It is green but also flowery. Not sharp at all, like some other green fragrances. Still not sure if I will buy it though, because it does not last very long. After less than an hour, I can dectect almost nothing anymore. I will try spraying it on my scarf, maybe there it will stay longer.

Update: on my scarf it stays for days, almost withouth fading. But it is not the same complex fragrance it is on your skin. Only some of the notes predominate and it is quite linear. I would not recommend spraying it on scarfs or other clothes, it ruins the wonderful complexity of this fragrance.

I tried Silences again after lots of months and surprisingly this review is different from my earlier review.

Before, I (someone who loves green fragrances and is a big galbanum-lover) thought that Silences was a bit empty, boring, somehow too 'thin'. But today it isn't. It's lovely, special, green and flowery, and the galbanum is strong and bold. I am really thinking about a serious purchase....

I guess one should always give fragrances a second (or third or fourth or more) chance. Fragrances are never static and neither are we!

Edit:
Next day. Oh Silences is addictive. I keep on sniffing my wrist. How difficult it is to choose between a purchase of Silences OR Chanel NO 19 EDT. They both are charming and green and unique. Anyone suggestions to clear my view? My door is open!

after reading all these reviews , and a lot more of thinking, i have purchased this as a blind buy! yet to receive it. heres hoping its a hit with me! ! :O

This is such an earthly beauty! Great fall fragrance when you feel that the snow is just around the corner. It is a bold fragrance on first spray, but develops and simmers down just a bit. Wonderful for the fall or even for the holidays or cold months when you start to miss anything green and earthy (especially if you live in a snowy winter environment). It is so appropriately named because you feel like you are almost in a green forest and just want to be silent and observe. Love it! Magical!

Silences, what can I say? I'm not exaggerating when I say that it smells like wet earth with crushed green leaves and tree bark with traces of powder on me. No florals whatsoever. Its a true chypre with good lasting power but mild sillage. Do I like it? I wish I could, but I can't. Its just a bit much, or maybe I am unable to appreciate its beauty. The good part is that my mother likes it and so it goes to her. Moral of the story, try before you buy. Its very well crafted but you would need to appreciate its uniqueness in order to wear it.

Fragrantlife

Based on the reviews and the fact that I am a Chanel no19 worshipper, I ordered it online and got it today. Well, this certainly is not living up to my expectations.

We know that perfumes are about skin chemistry... So my skin chemistry is saying that this one is doing nothing for me.

Very nice and intense green opening which, suddenly, is just gone.It abruptly settles into an animalic smell. No middle development. No galbanum, no iris, no lily of the valley, no jasmine. In fact, not much of anything but a subdued BO aura with some vetiver. Well, really, I just need to not wash for a couple of days to get the same effect. According to the notes, there is no civet, but that's how it smells to me. So maybe I have to blame the ambrette.

In any case, a very disappointing experience. and now, I have a full 100ml bottle if anyone is interested...

Shoshi

It smells more like Chanel No.19 than the current (reformulated) Chanel No.19 does. Enough said.

jennifer60656

I can't say that Silences and No. 19 remind me of each other. I mean, they are both floral greens and they are both wonderful for springtime but for me, that that is where the similarity ends.

No. 19 seems softer and sweeter to me - I get more grassy notes and lily of the valley. I think that one would work well for a very young girl (with expensive Chanel tastes!). Silences has more of a disco-era chypre "bite" to it. Either way - neither one is a "cold-hearted" fragrance. I think they are both very well representative of the beauty of early spring when the vegetation is very new and tender.

Silences has quite a bit of earthiness to it - with that "carrot" smell people are talking about. I got the image in my mind that Silences smells the way the world must smell to little rabbits sitting in the spring garden with the hyacinths, daffodils, moss and carrots - just delightful!!! Love it!

jujy54

I'm a lover of green fragrances, especially those created in the 1970s. Silences resembles a favorite of mine, Weil de Weil, in its galbanum and hyacinth notes. Where WdW maintains its floral vibe, adding some leather and civet toward the end, I get yes, that carrot note that soleia's daughter noted, and something like fenugreek or coriander—perhaps that's the ambrette I'm smelling. Alas, even a generous application is short-lived on me. Since I have rather a lot of WdW on hand, my mini of Silences will suffice.

POSTSCRIPT—I just wanted to add how very much I am enjoying reading everyone's reviews of Silences. It seems to bring out the descriptive and the metaphorical, and causes me to appreciate this still beauty anew.

POST-POSTSCRIPT on my second full bottle thanks to eBay. A real go-to for me, especially in warm weather.

As a big galbanum lover I tried so hard to like Silences. How excited I was when the sample arrived and I finally could sniff it. Yes there is galbanum, even lots and lots of it and I am so happy with that. But further on there is nothing else for me in the story of Silences that makes me smile, humble, excited or..... silent. It's a kind of bleak, empty to me. By the way, I don't get, like many others, the comparishment with Chanel 19 at all!

For the time being I stick with my draconian galbanum monster, the greenest wind ever, Vent Vert from Balmain.

If anyone has suggestions for a galbanum lover like me, you're more than welcome to give me names. I studied the classic vintage green fragrances with galbanum, but got very curious about the modern galbanum green fragrances from- let's say- the year 2005 till now.

How can 80 people think that this smells like Chanel No19? I don't get it, am I missing something here?
Chanel is much softer, more green, less aldehydes.
It's more like Chanel No5 with the initial spritz being aldehyde city!!
Aldehydes, more aldehydes and then some. Then just as I'm thinking 'oh GD please make it stop', it mellows slightly into this lipstick vintage aroma.
This is an old fashioned, vintage smell that kind've reminds me of 'Shocking meets Baghari'.
Great for those vintage addicts, aldehyde fans and soft powdery scent type of fume fanatics. Great longevity, but I expected something different, something colder and greener and somehow less vintage.

This perfume definitly deserve to be called Magie Noir 1000 times more than the Lancome one! (Wich is not macumba at all)
Silences cast a spell. Is an elegant Sorceress in a black long dress.

Spells instead of silences would be the right name.
I can realise now (with a vintage vial I've "found" yesterday) why so many people are enchanted by this creation.

If amethysts could have a smell they would have the scent of Silences.

A Masterpiece.

Every time I see that galbanum is one of the ingredients that perfumists notice most I say "my God another hair spray of the 70s!" But here this essence is noticeable but Imprisoned with oakmoss and some other voluptuos flowers in a delicious leather way.

Expecially in the drydown recall Vu by Lapidus

(I don't want to be rude but in some way this is a dark bar of soap and probably remember me in some way: "Fà", the varigate bar soap of the firsts 80s a sweet reminescence of my childhood)

It's taken me a while to figure out how to explain this fragrance. I can't really say what note(s) it is that put me off since I'm not great at identifying which is which, but there's just almost aggressively bitter green in this. I've liked many bitter greens before, but usually they have flowers or fruit at some point, whereas this one is the same thing the whole way through. To me it's violent and dark greenery, period. I don't get anything else.

I'm having such trouble with this. Silences is powerful, but somehow it's just a little bit too in-your-face for me. By that I don't mean sillage at all, that's maybe a foot at best, but if the fragrance had a personality it'd be ruthless and fierce in an icy sort of way. It's kind of scary really. Ominous with all that darkness. It's not nearly as savage as I'm making it seem. It's more like you're incandescently aware that all that force is barely being veiled, if that makes any sense. It's dangerous - that's it, that's the idea I was going for.

It's not for me. There are days I want to stalk around with this almost-menace running through my veins, but with being so completely dark green on me it's just a bit too extreme.

Took me ages to write about Silences.
This fragrance is like a psychotherapy session – opens gate to the subconscious. Its very private and very calm. Acts according its name. Silences.
I know that sense of smell is closely related to memory but I only received this perfume few months ago yet I KNEW it somehow. You know it happens when something strikes your nose and magic unfolds. And in this image I AM - ..In the forest. Beautiful forest of my dreams where I know every tree and every deer and fox know me. Very confident and powerful feeling of walking with bare feet on green moss. The bitterness at the beginning tells me I Am not weak, galbanum confirms the power, but among this harsh opening you see beautiful tender narcissus, powdery rose, crispy lily-of-the-valleys..I walk towards old little house, my house, with moss on the top of the roof - house of the Witch from the Green Forest. I know I will rest there, on my cedar-bed, on those pillows from vetiver and musk
Its a celebration of independence, of mystery, hours when woman needs and loves to be by her own...

Currently I live in a part of the world where there are no fashionable malls and the mail service is extremely unreliable. Since the scents I read about are often impossible to find, my newfound interest in fragrances has been mainly literary. However, today I decided to do a perfume fishing expedition at one of the local pharmacies. My catch of the day was a serene bottle of Silences.

I had actually read about the fragrance just a couple of days ago, and was full of curiosity. Words like "green", "forest" and "Chanel no. 19" popped up in my head. I love the color green, I grew up in a forest and I believe I once tried Chanel no. 19 at a tax free shop...

My patience is nil, so I ripped the box open in the street and sprayed my wrist. The result was a complete olfactory shock: How could anyone in their right mind relate this invasive sweet scent to cool green forests? It was a warm, blazing and very yellow experience which brought me straight back to my childhood in the 1970's: Silences is exactly the kind of fragrance that the grown-up ladies used to pour into their "cologne" bottles!

Silences accompanied me down Memory Lane, but definitely not through a forest. My initial reaction was to hide from the scent, but how do you run away from your own wrist? I kept sniffing, searching desperately for the sleeping wood nymphs others had written about in their reviews. As the day passed I started sensing the moss in Silences, the verdant trees - yes, I could well imagine nymphs passing silently on the narrow paths. This is not my childhood's northern fir tree forest: Bitter, aromatic and moist. No, Silences is a Mediterranean valley, where even the moss is sweet…

Edit: Could not keep my hands off Silences this morning. This is still a sunny scent to me: I see golden rays hitting the floor of the forest, covered in dried pine needles. Silences is really growing on me!

Sherihan

The notes written here confuses me, as I detect the rose (or floral accords) all the way from top to base. The green accord is the dominant one here definitely, and also stays very long(unlike 19).

lanuitblanche

If No. 19 is a witch-queen casting spells in a sparkling forest during the day, Silences would be that same queen having fallen asleep after dusk, and having fitful dreams on a bed of moss amidst the darkening trees.

Yes, they are similar, especially in the opening, but different enough to definitely warrant having both in my collection. Silences has a tenderness that I don’t find in No. 19, and it is deeper, softer, and less bracingly green — it is a warmer, darker green, there is more mystery here, and I don’t detect any leather at all.

Silences is like catching a glimpse of an elegant, inaccessible woman in a deep sleep — and to find that underneath the artifice of the face she presents to the world, behind that impenetrable intimidating exterior, hides a soft warm sylph that breathes and dreams and loves like any other woman — and with a heart of gold.

Chris v.V.

Reviewers describe Silences as icy, bracing, refreshing and sparkling. However, I sense the polar (no pun intended!) opposite. Oakmoss? Check. Galbanum and hyacinth? Retro feel? Check, check and check. Silences, to my nose, is extremely dry. Oh, so dry. Think: desert-dry. And dusty! Like: attic-dusty.

This fragrance dries down on my skin to a powdery hyacinth and rose (not my favourite notes).

Despite how I feel about this sample, people who have hugged me have said I smell good! Go figure!

Jacomo Silences
This fragrance indeed invites one to sit in stillness and contemplate the silence. It’s meditative, still, deep, and expansive; exactly like the experience of “going within” while deep in meditation. It smells of mossy fertile greenery and warm earth, with light, soft florals in the background.

It is classified as a floral green rather than a chypre and I couldn’t agree more. I think of a chypre as the representation of Spring – green buds bursting with life and on the verge of opening; tangy, vibrant, and fertile green. This fragrance is more like the deep mossy green of a garden that has been cultivated by an experienced gardener over years and years; someone who knows exactly when to prune and when to let nature have its way; someone who knows that sometimes the gnarled twisted bark of a fully grown tree is more than enough to capture my attention; someone who lets the tiny imperfections created by nature steal the spotlight. This is a garden that invites long hours of quiet contemplation, a meditation garden.

It reminded me of Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades. This is a garden built around a lake filled with swans, water hyacinth, and lotuses. It was designed with meandering paths and frequent spots to stop in the middle of the garden to meditate while overlooking the quiet, serene lake. This shrine houses the ashes of Ghandi, and the surroundings, so peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful, seem to embody his very essence.

I compared this fragrance side by side, on the same day with Chanel No. 19, vintage Vent Vert, and Niki de Saint Phalle, some of my favorite chypres. Chanel No. 19 is like a crisp, manicured garden with espaliered trees and perfectly contained flowers in complicated visual arrangements. Vent Vert is like a newly planted garden, at the beginning of the Spring, when the buds are ripe and ready to open. Niki de Saint Phalle is a colorful whimsical garden filled with art designed to remind you of your childlike sense of wonder. They are similar, but worlds apart, and each serves a different, though beautiful purpose. Jacomo Silences is a quiet, serene beauty.

Peaceful Elegance.

Strangely enough - though I liked this slightly bitter, galbanum composition from the first spray - it has taken until now for me to fall in love. I say STRANGELY, because we are experiencing an extremely cold blast of winter!!!!

I wore Silences this icy New Year's Eve, in a desire to experience a moment of peace and serenity. It's deep, forest-like aroma of GREEN swept me into a spirit of silent solitude........

How utterly Refreshing. In my associations, Silences bares a strong kinship to the novel - Shangri La - as both have an ability to transport one into an austere world of contemplation and peace.

For once, a fragrance aptly named. FIVE stars!

Vintage. I love it for acerbic greenery, for the foresty freshness, for gentle, nice lilies-of-the-valley, and for these kind, warm and see-through sun rays.

I was looking for a fragrance that contains galbanum(my sparkling favorite), and which is fresh, but also feminine. I already knew some perfumes like that(Chanel No. 19 EDT and Poudre edition, and of course Infusion d' Iris of House Prada), but I would like something a little bit different and -I don't deny- cheaper, because I'm not ready for Chanel spiritually( "I' m just a young girl ... " says Daenerys Targaryen ), and Prada fades away quickly on me.

So, it's a beautiful scent, a bit old fashioned, but I don't mind. It's tart and refreshing, the galbanum does his job, but with the passage of time the daffodils and hyacinths step up, and the whole thing feels like a walk in the garden. Maybe it's a bit nicer on me than the Chanel, because I feel the flowers so nature, in a gorgeous harmony.
The base is quite masculine, the scent of vetiver and cedar dominates, but it fits nicely, and gives to the skin delicate femininity, rather than taking away from it. The sponge cake is also better with a hint of salt.:)

The longevity is 5-6 hours on skin, much more on hair.
It could be my signature scent, almost all of my favorite notes are here.
I don't want the Chanel so badly now...This black and round beauty helps me forget all of my desires, and gives me the opportunity of internal focus, and the moments of silence. So harmonious, so soft, radiant and uplifting . Some people calls it cold, and ideal for office, and work... I don't disagree, but I think it just have a touch of melancholy and contemplation, which is often necessary to live our true feelings.

I have not worn any green fragrances for a while and actually bought this one by mistake as a blind buy. First spritz reminded me of a long lost love of mine Vent Vert by Balmain. I remember the original from the 60`s when I was a young girl. Silences is a lovely green crisp, bitter perfume that later dries down to a very wearable smell. It does not last long on me and for that reason I will probably not buy it again. I will however enjoy my bottle while it last.

Maodo

Is there a difference between Silences EDT and Silences EDP?

krmarich

My Silences arrived today after years of curiosity. Its a vintage spray bottle that seems to pull you to it. Its hypnotic, alluring and seductive. Thats before my first spray. This site introduced me to Ivoire, Metal, La Nuit and now Silences.

My first spray sent me into a reverie and I stopped all that I was doing. It opens with bold, heady galbanum. and just for a second I get all of the notes, especially the dark oakmoss and sandalwood. Then comes a subtle bouquet of delicate spring florals with clean white rose at the heart. The florals step back and let chypre accord play with the green note and galbanum again before the dry sandalwood, cedar and musk become prominent. These notes appear off and on for several hours, yet it remains a perfect composition.

This is epic in scope and as Chanel no. 19 began the 1970s, Silences brings it to a close. The comparisons are obvious yet it somehow makes perfect sense. I also get Givenchy III, Grey Flannel, Calandre and Metal. The 1970s was the decade of the glorious chypre in all of its splendid green nuances.

I am most comfortable in Silences. Perfection like this with my personal chemistry is rare and this is a once in a lifetime fragrance. Silences is beyond words...

This is an update to my review of June 11th, 2013:

So this comes into its own on temperatures of 35 C and above. It's been very hot lately where I live and all the perfumes in my wardrobe started feeling heavy or just plain annoyed me (and if you take a look, I don't really have any heavy scents).
Then I gave this one a go and wow - the galbanum feels so cooling! Silences, as its name suggests, remains discreet even in the heat, but maybe that's why it works so well. You sense the smell like a cloud around you, rather than actually smell it. Lovely.

Extremely thrilled to have found a vintage bottle of this in Singapore at $23(around USD20). Which, by the way, has a different spray mechanism from the one pictured; mine has a detachable cap.

I own both vintage Chanel no 19 EDT and this fragrance.

Is this a close dupe? Definitely. Is this an exact dupe? You've got to be kidding me.

Silences start off crisp, bitter and green, slightly brighter than Chanel no 19. Then, a soapy rosey note develops, which made me a bit queasy, fearing it would be a scrubber. Ignore it for ten minutes and the soapiness thankfully fades, leaving behind a bitter green chypre. The oakmoss, as stated by a reviewer, is restrained and modest(another way for me to tell is to see how red my skin becomes since I'm allergic to oakmoss). My skin amplifies the rose note immensely. Then, there's also the subtle hint of sourness that I found leaning over in cat pee territory but never really there - it's probably the cassia note.

Compared to Chanel no. 19, this one is much more green and bitter and less floral. Also, do note the Iris flower in this scent is definitely more subdued because of the exorbitant cost of using Iris flower oil/extract (this is perhaps the most significant difference with Chanel no19).

Overall I am very pleased with it. Highly wallet friendly yet distinctive.
Sillage: moderate
Longevity: 5-7hours

Let me start with the confession that I am a disenfranchised Chanel 19-er so I'm unlikely to be easily pleased! ... There have been so many changes to the formulation of 19 over the years that what orignated as green now seems a bit too 'rosey' for me ...

... Hence my trial of Silences ... it came heavily recommended as a smell-alike.

Really?

Don't get me wrong, it's certainly got the green, but none of the sexy slightly b*tchy class. The soapiness makes me feel slightly queasy within 5 mins of spraying.

Ho Hum ... off to try and score some Piguet Futur ...

"Carrots and roses!" said my 5-year old daughter, somewhat unexpectedly, when I first put Silences on.

She had a point, though, if by carrots she meant this vegetal, green element. And I was proud of her for detecting the rose, although she probably just meant it smelt like flowers to her.

Silences opens green and a bit bitter, then the flowers come in, then dries down (disappointingly quickly too) into a very nice woody - powdery base. Don't get me wrong, it is not warm, or sweet or sexy. It is indeed a cold scent, retro as others have said and would be quite good for the office. If only it lasted a bit longer and had slightly better projection on me. I've been wearing this for 3 hours and I have to really press my nose against my skin to smell it - and it's an EdP!

Silences was a recent blind-buy - it was inexpensive so thought I'd go for it. I'll probably wear it to work as it's discreet and has a "professional" vibe, but that's it. Mind you, I've been known to have perfumes grow on me, so I will update this if it does.

So after being blindsided by love for this perfume to the point where I couldn't even start to come up with the words for a review, I'll give it a shot today. The person who created this struck the perfect, masterful balance for every note in it. There is just enough green to keep the florals from being too sweet (I'm not a big fan of florals). There are just enough florals to keep the green from being too bitter. There is just enough oakmoss to ground everything and make it interesting. On my skin, Silences opens with a burst of green with a most mouthwatering lemon and bergamot, I can see where this comes off as 'sour' for many people. After the citrus fades, it becomes a perfectly balanced scent that stays pretty much the same throughout the whole wear. Silences lasts for hours on me and if I apply some in the evening, I can still smell it on my skin in the morning. This perfume brings to mind an overcast, drizzly early spring day with a cool wind blowing, there is nothing warm about it.

This review is for the PDT in the grey box. :) So in love...

ihano0d

In love with this perfume!! It's reminding me of my mother's scent...

This review is for vintage. After a short while I do see the similarity to Chanel No. 19, but after an hour or so this one isn't as ambery or "rounded off" as 19, nor as rosy. It's more subtle and feels more bare, which makes it more "masculine" than 19, for those who care. I've now got quite a few "feminine" chypres of this era and I'm not a huge rose fan (and already have some of those that I like, such as Rose d'Homme) so I don't think I'll need a bottle, but I can certainly see the appeal of this one. If you found floral chypres of that era to be too harsh, but like the idea, this would be one to sample.

Assiduosity

Silences by Jacomo is a perfume that particularly deserves to be talked about, a hush that demands to be broken.

It is a glorious green, replete with floral abundance, a masterful but restrained use of moss and an uncontained herbaceous feature that is more centrepiece than border.

It is an exercise in apparently effortless formality and clear-sightedly brilliant composition.

The opening itself is quite special, a surprising cool breeze of aldehydic muguet, shot through with sharp lemon.

Be alert though, for in this changeable spring day of a scent it is gone tantalisingly too soon.

Before any hint of disappointment can possibly set in at the loss of this commencement a tiered heart begins to emerge.

First the green chalk sour of galbanum arrives, only to be splendidly offset by the slight sweetness of hyacinths and more distantly rose and little iris.

Shortly after a late developing but rather beautiful and restrained oakmoss makes its entrance, providing a benign bitterness that allows the other notes to float more freely above.

Then, a product perhaps of this combination, or of the appearance of vetiver, cedar and ambrette in the base, a wonderfully natural accord of summer undergrowth, of stinging nettles in particular, comes to the fore.

This is a truly evocative aroma that carries with it the alternate heat and downpours, pleasures and pains of a temperamental temperate summer.

Silences, then, is a scent that contains two seasons, in one day and a single flacon.

And there we have a statement that should give you an impression of the tremendous scale of this achievement.

Sledges, forests, amateur botany and professional chemistry are pass times as fit for boys as girls.

Sharp and bracing like winter air in the morning. Bitter, soapy and green. A "cold" chypre.
Silences has a tough as nails quality to it. That doesn't mean it's masculine though. It also doesn't mean it's rough and unclassy.
It's a power bitch, ice queen fragrance with shoulder pads.

I have decided that galbanum is a common note in many of my favorite fragrances. In my quest to explore this note, I was able to try Silences (via a sample from a lovely Fragrantican). This, however, is not what I expected from galbanum--in Ellen Tracy and Imari, it is warm and comforting. Silences is cool and green, which I gather is a more typical manifestation of galbanum.

Silences is like a walk in a graveyard in the spring. You are surrounded by the smell of cold, wet stone and the fragrance of early spring flowers--lily and hyacinth dominate. The more I contemplate this fragrance and the mental image it inspires, the more impressed I am at how aptly named it is.

On me, Silences is linear, developing hardly at all from start to finish. The predominate notes are a very green and almost bitter galbanum, lily and hyacinth, a touch of rose, and an overarching sense of green-ness and freshness with a touch of powder. It is a spring scent, and very feminine to my nose. It is powerful, yet not overpowering. On my skin, it lasts about 5 hours with moderate projection. It is elegant but not overly formal.

For fellow 70's children--don't be surprised if you experience some vague, nagging deja vu. I think this was part of the background noise, the zeitgeist and undercurrent, of my childhood.

sophisticated

this is so strong and i love it, it's not suffocating, it's very unique & feminine & sophisticated -for a chic lady for sure :D- and lasts even after washing clothes and taking a shower, it sticks to my skin like crazy.. i wore it to the opera and i was sniffing it the whole performance, this is gorgeous, how can i put such a wonderful scent into words? it simply is phenomenal ^^ and NOT for the weak-hearted ;)

ROLDAN

Here is my little story. After reading some reviews on different online resources about Silences as unisex and even as a little bit masculine scent, I decided to take a risky chance :-0 . Finally buying the new 100ml bottle for only 19$, I have no regrets,,, Hooray!,,, Just a few sprays and I was returned like by the time machine back to the days when perfumery created only masterpieces scents. So it's a Real Classic's unnoticed by the main crowd hidden in this artistic / avant-garde bottle! It certainly smells like Chanel-kind fragrances (Chanel 19 I tested later...) and any similar to it. May be it sound's strange, but it reminds me little bit of my grandfather's cologne's. In a good way! With my chemistry Silences perfume has a lot of green and woody notes on the bright fresh-floral background. It doesn't smell so feminine (unisex indeed). I'll keep it and will use it carefully for evening use and special occasions. For someone it may smell "oldish" / out of modern-fashion stream. Well, this wonderful E.d.p is not for everyone. But Remember that Elegance and Classic's are Forever! :)

For the people who find this too sharply green, try a light layering with Champs Elysees.

After a few minutes it starts to work with my chimie. That makes me very special.

That makes me think about Creature Eau de Parfum. Year Introduced in 1987 by Gilles Cantuel.

I love it more and more ............. silences
Iris, Jasmine and Narcissus ... I can still smell after 8 hours. Oh ...
I want more of this fragrance

Silences make me something special.I am very special!

This is the sexy version of Vent Vert and the not so polished version of Safari. So many notes going on at once could make this a potential disaster, but instead it reaveals itself different on each sniff and with each movement of ones body. It feels like a dirty damp soil like lilly of the valley with a touch of Bandit leather lurking underneath and the dark brooding rose pumps underneath like a major artery. As a intense disliker of chypre, florals in 'fumes and oakmoss makes me gag I am so surprised. I will use my vintage version when I want to be that sophistcated girl gone bad at night. Damp, pungent and utterly sexy.

I got a bottle that predates the current bottle, as is my usual preference - anything older MUST be better.

One day this spring I was in Gordmann's spraying testers, happy to find out that they actually had them. I sprayed some Sung edt on one arm and was affronted by a intense green blast of cut iris stems. My nose tingled with it and wrinkled up, unsure of how to react. I didn't know what to make of it. I was a little afraid. I went on spraying & testing til I came home smelling like a French whore house, which was rather wonderful.

I kept remembering that acrid blast and wanted to repeat it. I bought an edp of Sung, and then an edt. I got nothing but spring flowers with a touch of green, very pretty indeed. But not at all like my testing experience. I have bought several green scents since and none lived up to that...until Silences. It was exactly that: fierce & bitter green, just like flower cutting time. Ahhh, at last! And also like cutting flowers, the moments slips back and then the blooms come into range again.

I think it is a shock when one is used to kinder, gentler perfumes. But really quite magical....

I agree with the last reviewer, this fragrance has a strong personality and is not for everyone. It is very similar to Chanel 19, except that Silences is a little sweeter and smoother, therefore somewhat more user-friendly. When I first tried it in cold weather, it was bitter and soapy and I couldn't stand it. On a warm day, however, I learnt to appreciate its character. It is very green and floral, ice cold but could be refreshing in hot weather. It actually reminded me of Guy Laroche's Fidji in that both are green and floral, both smell fresh with an "old school" aldehyde sharpness that separates them from the post 90's "aquatic fresh" scents. Fidji is definitely feminine but Silences could be Unisex. In fact I am pretty sure my dad has something that smells like this in his cabinet. I like it, but I would probably only wear it on days when I feel particularly brave and hot. Lasting power is ok, about 3-4 hours.

aworleo

This fragrance is not for the faint hearted. It has a strong, green, mean and bitter opening, which is to bold for my liking :( I will have to retest it( when I am ready ).

My verdict: This is not for me!

akats

Oh I forgot! I did not smell any oakmoss. That's my impression.

akats

A blind purchase of a tester parfum de toilette. Of coarse I liked it immediately, as it was almost what to expect. What I did not expect was its resemblance to chanel 19 edt which I arleady own. Silences, is more subtle and opulent and a bit more feminine I would say...Something between chanel and new vent vert (I have it also). Galbanum is not so strong as you may have read on some reviews. It is prominent at the beginning but not in a fierce way. After a while, florals step forward (lily, rose) and the smell becomes airy and gentle. No bitterness at all. As it happens to Vent Vert...
My only complaint is that my tester although seems vintage, is weak and doesn't last very long. Yet, I resume that with that purchase, I don't have the need to buy the chanel edp also. My hanger for green fragrances, is over. In addition, I suppose that when I will be run over of chanel, I will buy Silences instead which is far cheaper...

NoirDesir

the smell of this perfume reminds me of love beetween 2 lovers , hidden and seductive fragrance , the silence of a sinful story .after 10 minutes of wearing it the smell is quite soft and subtile . i do not consider it a strong fragrance and it doesn;t last very much . just as a forbidden passion. i simply love it .

Sheridan

Silences has been one of my all-time, absolute favorites, one of my "BIG LOVE, can't live without" perfumes since I first acquired it in 1981. I love it as much or more today as I did when I first sniffed it, and through the intervening years have always somehow managed to hold on to at least a sampler vial of it. It is one I've had to miserly ration or even only sniff the cap because there was no way to obtain more. In a much leaner time I was once *thrilled beyond measure to score a small handful of tester vials at an estate sale.

But, I do not wear it as often as one might think, what with being so madly in love with it. And that has caused me a great deal of self-reflection over the years. I don't wear it as often as others even though I love it more than some in my regular rotation. At times I've even second-guessed my commitment to it. There are other perfumes that are similar, and I have them and love them and wear them, but they are not Silences. It is special to me for reasons I can not fully articulate.

The initial blast of crisp and cold - no, icy - galbanum is like no other and must be what it is that hooks my heart. The hyacinth and hint of rose that follow and unfold is what sets that hook and the oakmoss reels me in.

Silences is deliberate, straight-forward and no-nonsense. It is sleek. It is high-speed and low drag. It is retro-contemporary architecture in the genre of Frank Lloyd Wright, with Milo Baughman and Russel Wright furnishings, a Modigliani hanging on the wall and a Henry Moore out in the shade garden. It is Dave Brubeck. It is Ansel Adam's black and white photography. It is a chilly, grey, early spring day.

It so perfectly conveys a part of me, and I wish to never be without it.

jaa456

This is my mother's signature scent so for that alone it will always make me smile. It smells like the rose and lily of the valley have been freshly cut, stems and all and shaken in champagne. It's bubbly, bright and fun, a refreshing daytime scent. Unfortunately the scent disappears as quick as bubbles on my skin.

karlovonamesti

Original formula: Silences starts out with a beautifully frigid bergamot and galbanum accord not unlike the opening of Halston 1-12, and rapidly opens a portal to bitter greens, the smell of cut stems, mosses, blooming hyacinth and muguet, and darker shades of still-pink and partially-opened roses. It's a heavy experience, and Silences weighs itself down as its lilting citruses and white flowers slip behind curtains of oakmoss and cedar. The moss is a bit powdery and does little to lighten things up. Silences is very green, but its gauzy texture and load-bearing bitterness give it a dated feel, and I'm not entirely certain it has weathered the years as well as 1-12, or even Chanel N°19. Still, it's an excellent composition, a landmark chypre, and I do believe that men should wear and breathe new life into it - did I mention it's unisex?

Current formula: It is common to read posts bemoaning reformulations of classics. Some relatively recent reformulations, like Azzaro Pour Homme, do the scent very little justice, but ultimately make things easier to handle in everyday wearings. Grey Flannel is another such success, and in this case the scent was improved. Silences is definitely a successfully updated fragrance. The entire structure feels much smoother, lighter, airier. Yet its bitter greenness and soft florals are still as beautiful as ever. The blast of frigid galbanum from the top is the only note that suffered - the original perfume boasted this note with crystal clarity, while the new version's is toned done considerably. I appreciate galbanum, but I don't really miss it that much, and if I find myself craving a dense hit of the green stuff I can always turn to Halston 1-12. Silence's mosses, powdery florals, and crisp greens move in much the same fashion as its original formula did, but the composition is definitely more demure, which makes it smell a bit more feminine. Still a terrific fragrance, with excellent unisex potential. I'll be wearing it a lot in the spring.

jasmasid

This is almost an exact smell-alike of Chanel No. 19 -- at a much more affordable price. Great for layering. You could easily spray on tons of this affordable masterpiece and then add a little No.19 on the top. Come to think of it, I almost prefer this to No. 19 as it has much more lasting power. Sshshhshh.....keep it secret or the prices will soar!

jesseg

it starts very bitter dry and after 10 minutes it reminds me of a rose camay bar....i like soapy fragrances but not this one

jtd

So many components point in the same direction: green. Galbanum, narcissus, hyacinth, hedione, lily of the valley, oak moss, vetiver. At various points in its evolution, Silences is cool, dewy, radiant, fresh, grassy, powdery, dark. Although Silences follows the traditions of both green florals (Vent Vert, No 19) and green chypres (Bandit, Ma Griffe, Miss Dior, Y) it doesn’t go the leather route. The moss balances out the florals and galbanum, but it never gets truly bitter in the leather fashion. It shares so many notes with other florals and chypres, but in the end veers smartly away from them. The drydown gets both woody and cozy with a strong cedar note wrapped in musks. Still it remains green with both a slightly peppery vetiver (that perfectly transitions from the floral/galbanum opening to the cedar) and a resinous moss.

There’s nothing slack about Silences. It is precise and to the point at all times, yet skirts the ice-queeniness of so many green florals and chypres. Silences demonstrates the difference between cool and cold.

Cubby

I love Silences, but there seems to be zero sillage and is very short-lived. How I wish it lasted longer. To my nose, it's like vintage Norell, vintage #19, and vintage Rive Gauche...but mainly #19. It's beautiful!!!

Tigerlillian

Silence... yes, except for the crickets chirping. Waves of heat rising from the dry terrain; sharp, green grassy accords that mellow as the humidity rises.

Shabby chic in the most charismatic way--crisp white cotton dress with well worn cowgirl boots, and a sprinkling of sun-kissed freckles on her nose.

passionata20

Tried it again today after latest attempt to like it and i must say that it is not my kind of fragrance. Very very green with a strong leather note. I like the leather note (which is probably not present here, but it smells like there it is) but then the green is killing it. I must agree that it does smell like a "Chanel nr.19" and "Safari" by Ralph Lauren, but much more drier and greener. The opening almost scared me away because of the very dominant orange blossom note since i am not a fan of oranges in fragrances. A slightest hint of hyacint note is making it softer but i would prefer it with more flowers in it. Lasting power is good.

Please do not remove this comment, since others might find it useful. Not every review should be positive, so people like me wanted to make a blind buy might find it very informative. Thanks.

mymlan

Bergamot in the top and oakmoss in the base defines a chypre, not floral green. I had a 30 ml of pure extrait until recently but as I didn't reach for it as often as I should, I sold it away.

I really like Silences. It is close to Chanel No 19 edp but a bit easier on the notes, less complex. Still Lily of the Valley, sandalwood and oakmoss creates an extraordinary beautiful fragrace that should be used daily. But as I seem to be more into white florals, florientals and fruity chypres I had to let it go. If you love green chypres, find, use and cherish Jacomo Silences.

Manna

I can't believe Silences has so many negative reviews here. I thought it's very well known with a firm fan-base.
I personally like it very much. I passed through all kinds of fragrance periods, passing briefly through oriental, pepper, citrus stages, falling in love with classic chypres, only to lead me to leathers, male orientals (M7 YSL, Habit Rouge, L'eau Bleue d'Issey), unconventional chypres with either strange combinations of notes or overexposed single themes, like the supergreen Balmain de Balmain, Vent Vert, Y YSL, leather+green+animalistic chypre Bandit, superleather Cabochard, male chypres like Aramis Aramis... but with every step I drew further and further away from FLOWERS.

So, all that said, I am surprised and fascinated by how well the hyacinth+overdose of green+powder+chypre base combo works in Silences. I get so much hyacinth simultaneously with that green blast from the very beginning that I was put off initially. As I said, flowers - no, thanks. But then a highly woody dry note and some powder come up to balance things and make everything work together.
For me, to this day fragrances were either dry or "mouthwatering". For the first time I see one that is both at the same time. It is very interesting, original and worth trying just to see how this combination of opposites turned out. I think that any high and pretentious niche line would die to come up with something THAT new.
I got it online for 18$. The best money-love deal I ever got. The bottle is gorgeous. Like the fragrance, it's both innovative and beautiful, and even though it looks like a circle, it's not! And it has a twist looked upon from the side. It stands very stable and the spray WORKS without any problem (NU YSL, you should be taking notes).

@bamboowu you can actually see the quantity left in the bottle very easily by lighting it from behind with a strong pointed light (like a reading lamp, not a torch). It works perfectly for Silences, Kyoto, Bandit and even Black Cashmere - all of which are black and deemed very opaque but at the lamp they look deep purple. Same works for Agent Provocateur which is also very opaque.

Received my sample today. I wanted to try as it was recommended for people who like Chanel 19. At first application (from a sweet little black circular stoppered bottle) I smelt a blast of sharp bitter green herbs. It was as if I were standing in the kitchen snipping wild herbs for a salad: bitter dandelion, rocket, cress, wood sorrel, sharp peppery yarrow. As it receded a bit, I could detect wisps of bergamot.

The green faded after about 1/2 hour and rose hovered in the air above my wrist.

After that, not very long after, I smelt tobacco and wood, which I assume were the woody basenotes.

On me, 3 hours later, I really can detect nothing but a faint sweetness.

I don't think it is anywhere as complex, elegant, or balanced as Chanel 19. It seems a much simpler perfume: a song, not a symphony.

I like it, but am not in love. Of course, I will try again, as all these things are so subjective: dependent on mood, physical condition, environment etc.

Incidentally, sweet and quaint as a stoppered bottle is, it is not a very good method of being economic with perfume!

Natalie467

Wow, very sharp and snappy green at the beginning, much more green than I'm used to. But wearable. I don't really detect any of the floral notes listed here, just greens and a little herbal. Very strong, great sillage and longevity and the lovely warm chypre dry down is fabulous. I like this a lot, its different.

nagia

My mom got it, as a gift.
I hate it!
Hooker smell alarm! Well maybe not. Depends. It also smells old, like something that a lady who has turned the century (and with very bad taste) would like wearing.
It's old. Not vintage, OLD.
It's way too strong for my senses, it smells cheap, ordinary, it makes my nose ich and it's pretty headachy.
But if you like it, go ahead and I really mean it, because second a hole bunch of people, my favorite perfume smells fake and plastic, but I love it!

miZZpuRRfect

omg, my grand-grandma would die for it if she wasn t yet dead. sharp soapy woody - oldfashioned aftershave-like fume. it seems to be inspired from the last century. hell! oh i love so mutch the purple one from silences range by Jacomo but this is just h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e.

Yourfoxiness

Oh, silences, I wish I could love thee... But I can't. At first whiff I got straight, sharp, green smelling alcohol. I thought, let's give this a while, let it warm up, settle in. But, alas, it never did. It smelled of grass, woods, and burnt plastic on my skin, and finally after a headache inducing hour, it warmed to a woodsy-cedar scent on my skin. Which was very pleasant, but I cannot get through the plasticky phase without a sinus headache, and by that time the lovely woodsy finish is just not worth the opening notes. Cold, green scents do not mix well with my chemistry. However, I would like to smell this on my man. I think the woodsy dry down would be gorgeous on him! Silences is a lovely green floral, just not for me.

[email protected]

I really like this one, very very impressive. Yeap, it is smth average between Chanel №19 and Chamade by Guerlain. I falled in love on these fragrances, all is green, a little bit aldehyde, and very feminine.
Jacomo SiLence it is smth startling.

soniamcalear

This is a very different scent to me. Seasons change the scents alot so spring and summer may produce a different effect altogether as I have found in many perfumes. In the winter this scent is pretty woodsy and pretty subtle. Its not a jump out and scream at you kind of scent. I have not smelled channel #19 so I do not know if they are alike or not but this is a smooth quiet scent to my nose.

candymarie

Because of the comparisons to Chanel No.19, one of my favorites, and because I'm a fan of another Jacomo scent, Jacomo for Her, I thought it would be a safe bet that I'd like Silences at least enough to wear occasionally. I've decided that perfume isn't worth wearing unless you really, really like it. Unfortunately Silences just isn't for me. On my skin, it is soapy and overly aggressive and just simply does not get along with my nose.

I bought Silences on a whim as a blind buy, based only on others' good opinions. It took me a while before I decided to spray it on my skin as I was so enchanted by the lovely bottle that I did not even want to use it ;)

I must say I feel pretty comfortable wearing it, it is a mixture of a classy, elegant scent and a casual, laidback ambience. It is a green chypre for me, somehow similar to Ivoire by Balmain, but less "chic". It contains tobacco for sure. Definitely my type of fragrance, old-fashioned in a positive, legendary way!

MMMMMMMMM? I wonder Silences by Jacomo
stole the notes from Chanel no 19 because
they smell like an dead ringer to me,
The same Greenish musky Cypre scent and
the note of Galbanum on the top notes.
It cost a fraction to the more Elegant
Chanel no 19. The scent is nothing to write home about i'm not a fan of green
notes they always make me nauseous if you
put too much on to me it's just a Common
run of the mill rip off of Chanel no 19.

But the only thing i like about this
is the flacon the unique and cute Half
circle of a bottle that's the only winner.

"It's a chypre!" were the first words that came out of my mouth upon applying Jacomo SILENCES. I had been wanting to try this for a while, having seen so much high praise for this fragrance in particular, and for the house of Jacomo, more generally.

SILENCES, to my nose, offers the drydown of a chypre: woods, oakmoss, galbanum. This is a linear, consistent presentation of the characteristic components that I expect by the drydown of any good chypre. What I don't find here is floral complexity and depth. On my skin, all of the layers have been compressed into one.

However, I do think that this chypre drydown smells very nice, and if I didn't already have bottles of more complex chypres which offer interesting development trajectories along with a quality drydown, I'd surely add SILENCES to my collection. But I do, so I won't.

Silences smells more like a traditional chrype than a floral green to me. I smell no florals in this one at all. I get mostly a green mossy fragrance that is a bit powdery.

I dont care for it, as Im not a big fan of chrypes, Ok so maybe this isnt a chype, but it smells like it on me. The oakmoss is very dominant on my skin.
Very affordable though, and I can see it has many fans. So if you like green, chrypish scents. This is a must try.

Oh, Jacomo, how I love thee! Please continue making affordable, high-quality fragrances forever!

Silences was actually my introduction to this house. I got a small sample of the EDP in a swap. I liked it well enough to purchase other Jacomo scents unsniffed, and well enough to seek out a small bottle of Silences parfum as a splurge. A drop or two of the parfum is all you need to get through an entire day. The EDP is also nice, if a bit fleeting, and is an affordable way to test drive this scent. Huge bottles can be found for $20 or less on the web. All of the Jacomo scents I have tried so far offer remarkable quality for an unbelievably low price.

If you love Ivoire de Balmain, Niki de Saint Phalle, Mitsouko, and other non-sweet classic dry chypres, you'll love Silences. It has a lot in common with those three scents, all of which I already own, but Silences was still unique enough to merit purchase. (I also see lots of comparisons to Chanel No. 19 and I haven't smelled that one in ages, need to give that one another test soon.)

Silences goes on dry, bitter and green, with no detectible florals or sweetness. It dries down over time to a pleasant woody aroma with pronounced cedar notes on my skin.

Old school? Retro? Oh, yes. This will either be your thing at first sniff, or it won't be your thing at all. But if you like it even a little, you'll grow to love it over time. It's so complex, mysterious, sophisticated and 100% unisex.

Having decanted quite a lot of this last week, I can now appreciate Silences. I wore this last winter and hated it--thought it smelled like plastic. I didn't realize that this has to be worn in the warmer weather to fully blossom. This is such a green fragrance, like fresh cut leaves. It almost demands attention when you wear it. I can't remember where I read this, but someone once said that Silences should be worn by anyone who has ever wanted to know what it's like to be heartless. I think it describes it well--there's no hint of vanilla or sweetness, nothing cuddly or soft, which could disturb some people.

It is very simirlar to the Pastale from the House of Matchabelli.

But the pastale is a darker juice, and lasts much longer.

Perfect for a hot humid day.

I'm happy to see so many people remembering and loving this fragrance. I remember when a friend of my mother's gave me my first bottle as a gift - it must have been in the early 80s. At first, I was taken back - I had never used perfume before, and this was a powerful womanly scent! But I grew into it, and I even think it helped me develop as a woman.

It was my signature perfume for many years, as a young woman, friends recognized my presence when they smelled Silences. It was ideal for a signature fragrance - fresh, warm, floral and very very feminine. It was ME.

So what happened? When I met my beloved husband, he thought everything about me is wonderful except for my perfume. It struck a wrong note with him. He didn't like it. He gave me Ivoire instead, and later Beautiful, and altogether softer fragrances. So I stopped buying Silences, but continued to regret it. It disappeared from shops, but I'm excited to see it around here.

I'm much tempted to order a little bottle and see how we have stood the test of time, my all time favorite perfume and me....

I love to see others loving what I have loved all those years!

I just received my bottle of Silences. It smells very similar to Chanel No. 19. Only much better!! Now this is a reasonable priced perfume. I bought it unsniffed because of the reviews written about it here and would never have known to try it.

nyoka

this is one of the best smelling fumes ever.the opening takes my breath away. it only gets better with time as the beautiful wet greeness turns as if by magic into a beautiful dew kissed red rose.heady sexy, but wait,,,,the dry down is just as impressive as the opening.woody ,mossy wet and deepky sexy again.one whiff and,i was hooked.this just may be my favorite fume.the price is right too.

Thank you to Bamboowu for kindly letting me try this.
I've persevered with it but it's not really for me. I love the initial 'greenness' - like a herb garden after rain or a split green stalk.
However, there's also a floral element to Silences and it's that that I don't really get on with - it's a little bit too '80s retro' for me.
In fact, there's a perfume that I had once in the 80s, it was a 'drugstore' one, quite cheap to buy, and I wish I could remember the name of it because this smells exactly like it, I think it was called 'Fleur' or something like that - a pastelly box.
The funny thing about Silences for me is that it smelled kind of different every time I wore it and at one point I thought it was a grower but that floral side kept getting in the way - it's almost like 'Fleur de Fleurs' by Nina Ricci - almost but not quite.
Anyway, thank you Bamboowu, you saved me from regretting buying a full bottle!

sue165

It used to be my mom signature scent. I loved on her.. I was 5 years old.. and always took the chance when she's not around to spray a little bit :)

Aquamary

Love with the first inhale. Delicately. Patrician. Absolutely mine! Assosiations: - black and white photo, silent movie, moonbeem on the water, silence, slightly melancholy, Chopin's nocturnes. Fragrance, that you need to be back again and again to. A lot of compliments.
For me it like Safari (RL)- without its sandy rose and Chanel N19 - without its a little bit sweety florals...

bamboowu

I love this fragrance, and just ordered another bottle. This is one of my "I don't ever want to run out of" fragrances. I smell lily-of-the-valley and rose, and the cedar, my guess is that the citrus is what makes it a little sharp for me at the beginning, it's like tasting a lemon sharp, but that is only for a few moments.

It is a beautiful fragrance...I never tire of it. On me it is a lovely floral...the initial sharpness quickly softens and transforms into the most beautiful and very feminine floral.

I only wish the bottle wasn't so opaque so you could at least see how much is left.

I'll always love this classy timeless beauty.

ARAMIS

I love it. it looks as Black-toned Jasmine IMO :)

Flora55

I finally got this - so very green, I love it! It reminds me very much of Balmain's Vent Vert at first, then it gets softer and more floral. I don't know how a green lover like me ever got along without this! I can't wait to wear it in summer.

shelpen

I am in minority on this...
Silences is very leather-y for my nose, not green: I don't "hear" any flowers at all, not even galbanum. I guess combination of sandalwood-cedar-oakmoss tricks my brain into smelling a new leather bag. :)
Wore it to school - was kinda bothered by the smell all class long.
Reminded me Cacharel Anais Anais - all leather, no flowers either...

Tala

I adore this perfume. This is the only one which I got so many compliments wearing. I felt so confident and beautiful with this perfume. A man in my past gave this perfume to me and I mainly wore it for him. But this gentleman was very naughty and adventurous. So I got to go to a lot of places with him and wearing this perfume is just reminiscent of all the places I have experienced with him. I just pick up the lid and I am back in 1985. Brain sorts memories by tagging them with scents and colors. I find scents have an amazing power to transport you to good or bad times in your past. Sometimes you want to keep the lid on, and sometimes you want to pick it up and take a whiff and remember what it was like back then and relive it all with your eyes shut.....

Gwendolyn

Beautiful perfume. Elegantly sparkles like an emerald. I has become my second skin.

parmania

I love it!This perfume is very green, firm and visible, hard.I feel strong and untouchable when I am with him:)

adeline_chan_sy

Am a lover of green fragrances but this one is a tad too classic, brisk and 'fierce' for me given that it's a 70's chypre. Realised I'm a modern green kinda of person, more lush leaves and herbs pls.

Mado Haddad

It's a real Retro fragrance.. Definetly not my type, or may be I find it not for my age, I dunno.. It's chic, but a bit too much for me to handle :)

Natalia78

Gorgeous fragrance.Fresh yet warm thanks to a strong rose note. The name is appropriate too - makes you stop talking and bask in.

noor_jehan

this is one of my favourites. it is definetely floral-green, a bit retro, with strong and unusual opening. later it becomes softer and very feminine. i got it as a present and it took me a while to come to like it, but definetely, it is a fragrance with character.
